Upon walking in, my friends and I sat ourselves in the front row nearest to the bathroom. We were greeted and welcomed which was nice. After we settled in our orders were taken and we proceeded to wait. There wasn’t very many customer during our stay so we figured the wait wouldn't be too long since there was just another family dining prior. Unfortunately, we waited around 15-20min for our food to arrive and all the orders were wrong. Both of my friends ordered the same exact item which was the ‘97 special’ but received only one item that was asked for and a random dish we didn’t order. I was given another ‘97 special’ though I had asked for the ‘79 special.’ After getting our orders wrong I was somewhat upset because this was surprisingly one of my friend’s first time trying sushi. We also noticed the family that was originally sitting in the seats near the entrance had commented towards the chef that the orders were wrong and they received a dish that the wife was allergic to so they were forced to set it aside without a touch. None of the employees took the dish back and upon receiving their bill they were charged for the dish they hadn’t eaten. When I received my food which was around 10-15min after sending the wrong order back, I took a bit and was extremely unsatisfied. The sushi I ate was lukewarm and not as flavorful as I hoped compared to my friends sushi which I personally enjoyed. Don’t order the ‘79 special’ or simply don’t dine at this restaurant because there are definitely more interesting and tasty options around Laguna Beach with quality...
Read moreI've been going to Hapi Sushi since I was young with my parents, and now I continue the tradition with my husband on special occasions like birthdays, and anniversaries. It's a homey little place with a lot of great atmosphere with Billie Holiday in the background at times, and other great jazz/blues singers. The chef/owner is very welcoming and friendly, as is his staff. But what keeps us coming back is the delicious and unique sushi rolls that you will not find anywhere else. The 79 roll is the chef's unique twist on the caterpillar rolls made with fresh fruit to go along with the eel and avocado, and it compliments the pairing beautifully. The appetizer, the yellowtail stuffed mushrooms are perfectly fried in tempura batter and come with this delicious cream sauce that highlights the mushroom as well as the fish. The 88 special is baked crab on top of halibut (I believe) and is incredibly delicious with the special "Hapi" sauce. I could go on about all the special rolls (you're in for a genuine treat), but I'll leave you with the pleasure of surprise. The menus now come with prices, so don't be afraid to dine here! We've always found the prices to be reasonable considering the uniqueness and...
Read moremy girlfriend and were craving sushi like no other, and took our first trip to Hapi Sushi in Laguna Beach.
The place is old and homely, but the chef is very friendly and even made us custom rolls since my girlfriend is very picky about her sushi. The rolls were delicious and different that anything I've had in orange county. We stayed for 2 hours until closing, and they didn't once try to push us out the door like i've read about at places like mosun. we arrived at 8pm on a saturday night, and were served immediately.
The #69 roll with strawberry is amaaaaaaazing! the japanese burrito roll is straight up EXOTIC. these guys are ahead of the game and very creative with their sushi. They've been in laguna beach for over 20 years, and the chef is a master sushi chef without a doubt.
This is by no means so trendy sushi joint that distracts you with fancy decor while mexicans...
