If Au Marche could have put a sign saying “we do not welcome Asians” or “White only”, I believe they would. I have lived in this country for almost 20 years, and my experience at Au Merche yesterday was truly one of the worst and obvious examples of racism I have ever experienced. I was the only customer when there were three people working there. I did not need to be greeted immediately, but I waited patiently at the counter so that one of them could help me to get some chocolate from the counter inside. I even said “excuse me” nicely a couple of times to get their attention, especially the one who was only 3 feet away from me. I was ignored. Just when I thought maybe I should raise my voice a little bit, a white man with European accent came into the store from the back door, which was far away from this manager at the counter. Surprisingly, the manager at the counter immediately greeted him warmly, and walked by ignoring me to help him: explaining, introducing, and wrapping gifts so warmly. It all happened like I did not exist there. I really had to politely raise my voice to get their attention: “excuse me?! I have been here for a long time.” The manager finally glanced at me from the corner of her eyes and talked to the white guy: “oh, she was first? I did not know.” Then she asked another person working there to ask me what I need to buy. Please do not tell me there is a better explanation than racism and discrimination. Au Marche, if you do not want to sell your precious European goods to Asians, you can put a sign saying “No Asians allowed” and our Asian community would love to help you advertise your...

During my exploration of Lawrence, Kansas, I trekked over to Au Marche. With my current book, The Fat Girls Club Paris Bound on it’s debut, I longed for a return to The City of Lights. This quaint and delightful shop was a reminder of the ones I came across along the streets and alleys of Paris. The store offers a sampling of beauty, food and other fun items. The clerk, October, (yes, that is her name) assisted in my search for items to offer my contest winners. She was an enjoyable host as she pointed out unique items I couldn’t find anywhere else. Don’t pass up the candies in the display case. Not only are they a treat for the eyes, the flavors will wake up your taste buds. Overall: This classy shop is worth a visit because of the wonderful...
Read moreAu Marche and it's counterpart store are always part of my downtown trips. I always find something I want in there. My husband found his now regular soap, the Mistral brand bar soap, which are all good quality and amazing smelling. I also usually go here around Christmas to pick up a specialty blend ground coffee for my mother. When I'm feeling particularly fancy I will treat myself to the delicious and inspired chocolates they sell in the front case. I highly recommend at least getting a 4 pack at some point, it's at the very least an excellent form of self care, and also a...
