I had an extremely disappointing and uncomfortable experience at Allure Nails in Lemoyne, PA, and I feel it is important to share it—especially for other women of color considering this salon.
When I arrived, I was barely greeted. The first woman who acknowledged me simply said, “You come for pedicure, right?”—no warmth, no introduction. I complimented her eyebrows in an effort to feel out the space and create rapport, and her response was cold and dismissive. As a woman of color, I have learned to quickly gauge whether I am in a welcoming or hostile environment, and from the moment I walked in, I felt like I did not belong.
Looking around, I noticed I was the only customer present that looked like me; the space was filled with Caucasian clientele. While that alone is not an issue, the stark difference in how I was treated compared to those customers was glaring and deeply unsettling.
The young woman who did my pedicure appeared visibly irritated any time I asked a question. She frequently rolled her eyes and spoke to her coworker in another language while casting glances at me—behavior that came across as unprofessional and likely disrespectful. This kind of whispering and private chatter was not occurring with the other customers. It felt like I was being mocked or judged for simply existing in their space.
The service itself was subpar. I paid $78 for what was supposed to be a pedicure that included a scrub and callus removal. Instead, she soaked my feet, filed the nails and cut them down, filled two of my toenails with acrylic, painted them (poorly), and performed a quick lotion rub—without addressing any of the actual dryness or roughness that brought me there in the first place. The bottoms of my feet looked and felt exactly the same as when I walked in. The entire service felt rushed, up charged, and petty.
I also experienced unnecessary up-charging. I inquired about getting a small Puerto Rican flag painted on one of my big toes (in celebration of my son’s July 4th birthday), and I was quoted $93—nearly $100 for a basic flag design on my big toes. I said nevermind. I then asked about switching to red french tips instead of white, and was told that would cost $13 extra—totaling $91 either way. These prices were not transparent or reasonable and felt designed to discourage me from ever coming back to be serviced again.
It was clear that I was not being treated like a valued customer. It felt like I was being tolerated, not welcomed and I am very respectful, humble, and I don’t make a fuss about anything. My simple questions about pricing were met with skeptical looks, as if I couldn’t afford the services—which, frankly, is hilarious. My husband pays, and was fully prepared to cover ANY costs. But, respect is not something money can buy, and that was missing entirely. So, I declined several up-charges and just kept the base paint, didn’t even get the white French tip line painted because I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. I noticed the bias from the get go.
I do not recommend this salon to ANY women of color. The environment was alienating, the service was poor and they will talk about you while looking at your feet as if they don’t want to touch them (I am clean and my feet were unpainted other than that, they were presentable just a little dry), the pricing felt opportunistic, and the undertone of racial bias was unmistakable.
Allure Nails appears to cater exclusively to a CERTAIN clientele—and I left feeling unwelcome, unseen, and disappointed.
There are plenty of salons where your presence, money, and time will be respected.
Unfortunately, Allure Nails is not one...
Read moreI went to Allure for their highest tier Japanese Head Spa service. I called on Tuesday for an appointment on Saturday. When I arrived on Saturday I went into the nail shop and let the employees know I was there for the appointment that I booked earlier in the week. I after about 10 mins I was taken back to an extremely small, dark room, and was given instructions on what clothing to remove for the treatment. I could barely see, and ended up turning on the lights looking for somewhere to hang or place my clothing… there was nowhere for my clothing to go, so I placed them on the floor ion t op of my shoes and purse. The small room was not exactly clean, there was old dusty used wax sitting in a warmer and random dust covered objects at the foot of the massage bed. The employee returned to the room, turned the light off, and instructed me to lay on my back with my head in the water bowl. The position I had to lay in was extremely uncomfortable as my feet were highe than me head and my neck was bent back to reach the very hard headrest. When the treatment started it was neither relaxing or enjoyable the employee was extremely rough with my hair and head, at one point literally slapping my head and intensely digging her nails in my head and scalp. The water was cold and the products used in my hair smelled like icy hot. When she massaged my neck it was a ton of unpleasant extreme pressure and lots of nail gouging. When I flipped over for the back massage I had to ask the employee to ease up on the pressure as it was so painful. I have had several massages in multiple countries but this was the worst. My head throbbed the rest of the day and I woke up the next morning extremely sore throughout my shoulders, neck, and back. This treatment was not slow, relaxing, and enjoyable, it was frantic, painful, and extremely disappointing. If you enjoy extreme painful pressure during a massage this might be the place for you. This is not what I was expecting or wanted for a...
Read moreI recently got my lashes done with Kim, and she charged me $160 for clusters. I’ve never paid $160 for clusters and I also got my eyebrows tinted, and hated them and she did not give me a refund for them. They were big and uneven, she wouldn’t even take them off for me I had to take them off myself. Also, the eyelashes came off one eye completed and took off all of my eyelashes with it. So I had to use oil and eyelash remover to remove the other eyelashes and it took off all of my real lashes. My eyelashes are bald because she decided to deceive me and put clusters instead of individual lashes. When I first came to her she said she didn’t do clusters because they pull your real lash out and weight your lashes down, which is true. I grew my eyelashes out for a whole year because I kept getting them done and they fell out. Now I decided to get them done only to be tricked into getting clusters instead of individual lashes. I asked for a full refund after telling her my lashes came out and it hasn’t been a week yet. And informing her that the clusters she did pulled my real lashes out and now no lash tech will do my lashes because they’re too bald. She just text me saying they don’t do returns. First off I’ve never paid $160 for clusters and would have never agreed to even getting them done if she was upfront about not doing individual lashes anymore. Second if you tricked me into getting a service why charge me 3xs the cost of what clusters run. The application was so bad it ruined my real lashes and pulled them out to the point where no lash tech will do individual’s on me until they grow back. I’m beyond pissed and would have given her zero stars if I could. She’s money hungry and bad for business. Don’t go to her for lash service because when she messes up your real lashes will have to suffer...
