This place is THE BIGGEST and THE BEST local yarn shop EVER!! I've been to yarn shops in multiple states, and WOW! From basics comparable with your chains (price and quality) to ultra fancy lace weight cottons, linens, alpacas, silks, to your bulkier yarns of various fibers...lots of stock, bundles/kits, and sheer amazing array of fiber types, colors, and weights...all the extras for knitting and crochet, as well as Tunisian needles. Pattern books galore, too. I had to fly through due to time constraints. Though, I could have spent $$$$$ here. Thankfully, for my pocket book, I live NOwhere nearby. Yet, if I ever win the lottery that I rarely play...I will have to say this will be my final destination before I hermit. If you can't find what you are in the market for here, you'd better learn how to spin. I picked up 2 extra large hanks of luxuriously soft deep purple tussah silk, some beautiful cotton that is a perfect match for my living room colors, and a cake of this gorgeous buttery yellow and light lilac silk blend...all will become something amazing in the future. These are all FOR ME yarns, my personal pamper splurge. Which, as crafters or needle artisans, we don't do enough of (they are almost always gifts). The owner was very friendly and chatted a pinch. I hope she didn't take me as being rude, I was just hurried...not wanting to keep my cousin who was kind enough to whisk me away from my semi truck for a couple hours of family time and a pinch of heaven (for me, she's not a fiber fiend) in a very GRAND local yarn shop. It sounds as if the owner and her staff are amazing with project assistance, too.
The only thing I found disappointing, no roving/loose fiber for spinners. However, I wouldn't want to sacrifice the space they have dedicated to the most amazing selection of yarns I've ever seen. Not in a million years! If you are a yarn fiend...this is worth the drive!! I mean an overnight stay in a hotel level, worth the drive! Like Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, or Pittsburgh level, WORTH THE DRIVE!!! If I could gush any more I would, go...just go. You...

I call MI Fine Yarns "my happy place" -- warm, welcoming & helpful. Look no further - THIS is your yarn shop!
UPDATE JULY 2019: I continue to stand by my comment from a couple years ago - "the BEST fine yarn shop around!" Not only does the variety of yarn choices continue to grow (you can find anything here - from very high end yarns for heirloom and special gift projects to more budget-friendly options that will still result in beautiful works of beloved knit projects/gifts) but the staff, teachers and overall atmosphere continue to get better and better.
I read the review of the person who felt "watched" in the store. Can't image the is even close to what actually happened!! Swaran - and her team - are all about LOVE. Silly word maybe to describe a business but it's true. The store is Swaran's passion and a living tribute to her mom, for whom her love of fiber art and bringing people together for "goodness of community" sprang. Swaran wants good things for all of us - not just her customers - but her fiber art family.
Bottom line: shop this store for, not only great yarns, but for learning, friendship, GREAT service and a super, super comfortable...
Read moreAfter seeing great things about this store on my local Facebook knitting group, I stopped by when I was in the area. I just needed some stitch markers but thought it would be a great time to check it out. As soon as I walked in I knew it was a special place. The yarn was beautiful, everyone working there was delightful and helpful. There was a group of people knitting and chatting. It felt warm and inviting. I browsed for a bit but managed to leave with only the stitch markers, deciding to return soon with a pattern in mind. The next day my mom broke her arm, and a couple days later I decided to knit her a lap blanket. I figured this was a great reason to head back to MFY. I'm not a new knitter, but I've never knitted a blanket before, and I didn't really know what I was looking for in a yarn for it. Plus, in a store full of absolutely beautiful yarn it's hard to focus! After browsing a bit, I asked the owner, Swaran, if she could show me some yarns that would knit up well into a lap blanket. She was so helpful, shared two really beautiful options with me, explained why they'd be great choices. One of them was just perfect. I'm already 1/4 way through the blanket and it's knitting up even more lovely than I imagined. This is now...
