As I start this review, I feel as though I am returning a long over due library book. I’m slightly embarrassed that it’s so late, but it’s the right thing to do.
I just realized that I didn’t write a review for Smythe & Cross last year as I said I would. It’s late evening right now, but I was felt compelled to write and add another 5 star review.
Here is my story. At the time, I didn’t know much about jewelry or diamonds, but I wanted to gift my wife a special replacement for her lost earrings. I neither have a lot of time to visit stores to shop, nor enjoy it very much to be honest. I did my own research, figured out what I wanted, and patiently waited months to source the right pair of loose diamonds to make into earrings. The road was not without bumps and detours, but I enjoyed the process and learned a lot. Thing is I also burned a lot of time. At the final stretch, I couldn’t find a quality, well reviewed, jeweler in the area that I felt confident about and could accommodate my (now shortened) timeline to make into earrings.
I pretty much reached out the every 4-5 star reviewed custom jeweler in the area. Some didn’t seem engaged at all; I was just a random email or phone call. Some were the opposite; very pushy and seemingly only interested to discuss the earring design and timeline only after I brought it to them. No thanks.
Khatchig’s response to my initial inquiry was warm, thoughtful, and more importantly, I felt heard. He cautioned on the tight timeline, but said he would try. I could have went with another jeweler that offered to commit to my timeline, but I was willing to take the risk with Khatchig. I met him at his shop to discuss further and nail down the final design (such as wanting the prong tips shaped into a claw vs a typical rounded tip). He made it super easy, and I appreciated his perspective and advice on the design. When I had a moment of doubt, he sensed (correctly) that I just needed some assurance. I closed my eyes, left it in his hands, and he delivered the goods.
Every time I see the earrings I’m reminded of this journey and experience. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself - as much “fun” as it could be to research and source your own diamonds (ratios and angles in addition to the C’s) and turn them into earrings, save yourself (I mean “myself”) some time (and the headaches) and go get Khatchig’s help from the start. I trust that he will listen and offer personalized advice to help find the right diamond or right piece of jewelry for you.
Anyway, just sharing that I’m very happy with the way it all turned out, and I wanted to (finally) give a shout out (a Yelp!) to Khatchig at...
Read moreDue to prescribed medications, my joints are often sore and swollen. Several months ago, I had to remove all my rings for x-rays, including my wedding set and pre-engagement band which had to be cut off. Smyth & Cross was recommended by a friend to repair my rings. My husband and I walked into the store and were warmly greeted. Annie approached us and invited us to sit. I was feeling a bit emotional about my rings, but she put my fears to rest. I showed her the rings and that they would need sizing, and the one repaired. She took her time to look at each piece, noting that one of the settings looked like it was bent. Annie wrote up each repair request carefully and thoroughly. Within a few days I received a call with the repair costs. It was very reasonable. The goldsmith even checked each setting and recommended that all stones be reset. With our approval, the rings were repaired and in within days they were ready for pickup. My rings are beautiful. There are no visible marks for the sizing and no evidence that the one band was even cut. I’m happily wearing both rings every day. Annie was both personable and professional. I highly recommend Smythe &...
