This is a custom wedding ring made by Bunny Bedi at Made in Earth. The inside of the ring is my grandpa's wedding ring, and the outside is a custom gold and oxidized silver ring. After working on several custom designs that involved a little more cutting and reshaping, I saw a similar oxidized ring in the Venice store and said "that, but with grandpa's ring on the inside" and Bunny made it happen.
Speaking with Bunny, he was very upfront about the process and technical challenges. He even told me that working with an heirloom ring, working with my own gold as opposed to just taking the ring and using new, fresh gold ... he shouldn't do it, there's no professional gain in doing so. Most jewelers I spoke to shared that sentiment: it's unheard of to remake someone else's ring into a new thing because there are impurities and such, and that was the end of my business with them as I was dead set on using my grandpa's ring but customized closer to my tastes. BUT Bunny recognized the emotional weight of using my grandpa's ring, given to me by my grandma when she passed two years ago, and wanted to take on the challenge so he could be part of that story for my wedding. When it finally arrived, he made a point to show me that the only part that wrapped around my finger would be my grandpa's ring, and that means a lot.
It wasn't a perfect process - a lot of back of forth with me, the scared client afraid of sending an heirloom away to potentially be ruined - but I am very happy with the results. It looks fantastic in the sun and, even though it came back a size too large it was resized (in Australia!) quickly and, to make up for the error, they even offered me a discounted ring to wear in the meantime.
Everyone who has seen the ring in person, especially in bright light where it really shines, has said how beautiful it is, and I loved working with someone who recognized the emotional significance of this task and was excited to take it on while also respecting my fears and decisions in...
Read moreI have only made one purchase at Made In Earth, but it was a big one! Last year, I made the choice to propose to my girlfriend (now fiance) and I set about looking for a ring. She's not much of a ring girl and I knew she had no interest in a more traditional engagement ring. I looked at ring after ring till I was about ready to tear my hair out and they all looked the same to me.
I hadn't a clue what my next step should be when my girlfriend and I were over in Venice and walked into Made In Earth. All of the pieces were so unique and had such thoughtful little details. The staff was very helpful even though we didn't show any sign of making a purchase.
I decided to email the shop a day or so later and ask about custom pieces. They put me in touch with Bunny (owner/designer) and we got to talking about how he could help. He was very honest with me about what he could do within my budget and explained why he felt the need to steer me away from certain design choices due to durability and cost. Bunny worked with me and transformed my vague ideas into a gorgeous ring.
I was sooo nervous when I was on my way to pick it up. I was worried I should have picked something more traditional and safe. When Bunny showed me the ring, I immediately felt a sense of relief. It was perfect! Unique, but still elegant. It sparkled and stood out without being gaudy.
My fiance absolutely loves it and I am so glad I went with Bunny and Made In Earth. He really took the time to understand what I was looking for and get it right. I definitely plan to be back for future,...
Read moreI serendipitously walked into Made In Earth and was welcomed in by Jaclyn. I am new to the world of gems and crystals so Jaclyn eased me into the store by asking about my birthstone, and we worked from there. She’s incredibly knowledgeable and warm, and you can tell she genuinely wants to help people find a piece of jewelry that speaks to them! At one point she suggested meteorites and I said YES let’s look at those (I love space). She told me the history of this gibeon meteorite that landed in Namibia that was discovered in the 1800s. It has this interesting pattern called a Widmanstatten pattern that is formed over thousands of years. She helped me pair the pendant with a chain by giving me several options to choose from. Jaclyn is a joy to talk to about jewelry. She also displayed a drawer of unique rings and I ended up picking out an Apache gold ring on a silver band. I should have spent more time in the store to just look at the other pieces after purchasing, so I’ll definitely be back for more. Thank you Jaclyn for a great introduction into what seems to be a new interest of mine! It’s only been one day but these two pieces of jewelry already have a bit of sentimental value to me because they remind me of Jaclyn’s positivity! I had a...
