Staying here was a horrific experience. It might just rank up there with one of the worst travel experiences we have ever had. And, I am a very seasoned traveler. I would recommend to anyone wanting to stay at a hostel stay at the venice beach hostel around the corner. Most of the staff was ok except the manager and one other employee I gave a 40$ tip to who was supposed to share the money with his fellow employees but just pocketed the cash. Sara Booth the manager is not only dishonest her disposition and temperament is not well suited for the hospitality industry. Some of the European/Canadian guests were extremely rude making comments that they" hated all Americans" and" thought most Americans were "douchebags." I was asked if I" voted for Donald Trump" and told Trump's presidency is proof of "how stupid Americans' are." The music from the bar downstairs is so loud it literally shook the floor and walls of our room and goes until 2-3am every night. Wearing headphones turned all the way up does no good that is how loud it is. The bar makes far more money than the hostel for the Samesun corporation and that is why it happens. Ironically the guests are told not to make noise in the rooms after 11pm. Also, one of the people staying in our room said he was a recovering heroin addict and a male prostitute who was sick and coughing constantly. He also was acting in an unpredictable manner and exhibiting violent tendencies which alarmed many of the guests. This individual is a homeless Venice beach local known in the area and we believe hostel staff knew about him and he could pose a threat yet allowed him in for whatever reason. Also, I accidentally made a small stain on a sheet and the management without even looking at the sheet or consulting me put a 100.00$ unauthorized charge on my bankcard. I offered them 20.00$ a much more fair amount. Sara Booth realizing a sheet did not justify a 100.00$ charge changed her original story and said I damaged a mattress. Even the maids told her I did not damage the mattress but she was not giving me back my money. So I called my bank and Sara the manager overheard and became irate telling me to leave immediately. In the meantime I realized the staff had taken 35.00$ worth of alcohol from me and caused me to leave behind a 100.00$ pair of leather shoes. Which of course their actions caused the loss of my property but they say their not responsible. The law of course supersedes their policy. I suggest to everyone not to stay here and if you do pay in cash nightly not in advance. And do not give them a bank card number. Otherwise, you may get home and realize some unauthorized charges on your card in the hundreds of dollars for damage you never caused. Dishonest companies like this deserve to go out of business.
The response by the management in my case is typical of dishonest merchants. Everything, I said in my review is 100% accurate and I stand behind it fully. I was never aggressive, matter of fact, I was the exact opposite even when being insulted. I told Sara Booth about the shoes and also mentioned them in the e-mails. I was never aggressive I simply told the truth about their unauthorized charges on my bankcard and the falsehood that I damaged a mattress. Nearly every mattress in my room was stained on one or both sides because Samesun is too cheap to replace them and they can use them to falsely charge guests' credit cards. I tried being reasonable and offered 20.00$ for the stain on the sheet but they were determined to punish me for some reason. How often does the ownership react to negative reviews; very rarely. So that should tell people there is truth in what I'm saying when a review gets this kind of reaction. There is a personal animus here for me standing up for myself. Samesun is upset the bank sided with me and returned my 100.00$ and if they were honest they would give me the 115.00$ for the property which was stolen or lost because of...
Read moreAwesome place to stay at. By far one of the better hostels in LA post-pandemic. Unfortunately covid killed a lot of hostel-organised activities nationwide, and this hostel unfortunately doesn't do that too. But the common lounge is a great place to meet people and I managed to chat with a few who were, unfortunately, leaving just as I was waiting to be checked in. Nonetheless, met 3 cool Aussie lads for roomies and we vibed well and hung together for the day and night. Short trip for me, one day/one night only, as I was catching a connecting flight, but it was a fabulous experience hanging with other like-minded travellers. Been to LA too many times already anyway and seen most of the touristy stuff already. Just needed time away from home to relax and party.
Room: Beds were comfy. Not assigned so first-come, first-inhabited basis. Dedicated power outlets (TWO!), nightlight and shelf at each bed. 1 locker per person, though a little small to squish my entire bag in, so perhaps just to leave valuables and not attempt to shove all in like me. Make your own bed, return the sheets when checking out. Towel provided during your stay.
Ensuite bathroom: Clean and spacious. Comes with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Hair dryer included too (room 206)! -the common bathroom on level 2 does not have a hair dryer though, though I suspect you can loan one from reception, if needednn
Breakfast: Decent breakfast spread of coffee, juice and assortment of breads, spreads and grapes. As mentioned by another reviewer, would be good to include some protein like ham and/or eggs too.
Location: Right by the beach! You can't find any closer accommodation unless you buy one of those beachfront houses! Not too far from LAX. Would need to switch buses though to access it, but definitely much cheaper option than Uber/Lyft. You'd need to catch the LAX free shuttle to the LAX City Bus Centre too to access the Big Blue Bus 3 towards Santa Monica, then change to another (a few options) to get into Venice Beach. Bus pass available on Google Pay (and Apply Pay,...
