Busywork Craft Supply — Local services in Martinez

I’ve visited yarn stores across the UK, EU, Asia, and the USA. I always make a point to visit local yarn shops when I travel or explore a new area because I love supporting small businesses and connecting with the local fiber community. I’ve never left one feeling so unwelcome—until today.

Today, I stopped by Busywork. Sure, I wasn’t dressed up and may not have 'appeared' to be a knitter, but I’ve never believed people should be judged by their appearance. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to be the attitude here. I walked in, looked around, and the only acknowledgment I received was a flat, “Let me know if you need anything.” It felt more like an afterthought than a genuine welcome.

Ten minutes later, two other customers came in with their Bay Area Crawl bags and were greeted warmly by all three staff members—smiles, cheerful hellos, the kind of welcome I’d hoped for too.

The difference in treatment was hard to ignore. I promptly drove to Coven of Stitches in Alameda, CA., gladly spent my money, and happily added them to my contact list. I’ll continue supporting local yarn shops that truly value all customers and create a welcoming space—no matter what someone’s wearing or how they 'appear' when they walk...

I went into Busy Work on Thursday looking for yarn for my Vintage Shrug Pattern. Bernadette jumped right in with suggestions for wool. I went home and started my project and reached a problem a couldn’t solve. I went in this morning (Friday) and Bernadette coached me through the issues that came up. Now I am leaving for my trip tomorrow with a project I understand and can work on during my flight. Bernadette is a patient, creative and generous teacher. I love Busywork! They stock interesting yarns and craft materials that you just don't see in other shops. Plus the owner is super knowledgeable and the service is top notch. I've been a customer since they were located in St. Louis, and they're still my favorite LYS.
