I can’t say enough about this experience! This was definitely an experience of a lifetime for me, an experience I’ll never forget. I am an animal lover but fearful of the water due to my extreme phobia of sharks. I have to say being with Church the surf Dog I didn’t even think about a shark once! I felt so at ease out on the water even with the waves I consider big lol but really aren’t. I couldn’t understand how a dog could teach you until I saw Church going through all the steps right in front of my eyes. James his owner explained with instructions beforehand but it was a whole different lesson watching Church. I am still in awe of how he knows when a wave is coming, how to position yourself low as it creeps up to then stand tall when it’s riding and move his body with the surf board. JUST INCREDIBLE!! This has definitely made my trip as I flew in from Miami to help MHS & HARF with the animals affected by the fire which has been a lot emotionally. I was able to forget about everything for 2 hours and just enjoy the natural beauty of Maui. I am so very grateful & thankful. We surfed with James and Church (The best pup on the island) Memorial Day 2019. We had originally booked with another group (Maui Beach Boys) and maybe it really wasn't there fault, but for some reason they cancelled on us without being able to get into contact with us. We stumbled upon Surf Shack in Kehei where at the last minute, we were able to book lessons for our group of five with James -- which he agreed to, in spite of the fact that he was planning to be done for the day.

I've taken several surf lessons before and this was the best one I've ever taken. He doesn't waste your time on the ground-- he teaches you how to get up and then he takes you out into the water. He's attentive, instructive and everyone in our group -- even the more hesitant people were able to stand up at least once.

It would've been amazing just for those reasons, but ALSO THERE WAS A DOG. When we fawned over the pup, James offered to bring him out with us and once we were comfortable we each got a chance to surf with the pup - he's a much better surfer than us and actually makes it easier to catch a wave.

Me and my daughter went to Hawaii over spring break. It was my daughters first time in Hawaii and all she wanted to do was surf. I surfed in my 20s and I’ve dated a surfer for 2 years but James was the first one to ever take her out. He was amazing it was her favorite thing of our whole vacation. My favorite thing was all the shops were booked & James is true to the love he has for teaching the kids to surf. He shut down the shop and took the kids out himself. He was so patient & fun. Brooke and my friends kids all were up and surfing in no time. My Brooke had the best real surfing experience! . The private lessons with James were beyond worth it ! He was very funny, very helpful and improved both of our surfing! It was the best Maui experience that we had! Go and book now.
