LA Fitness — Local services in Menifee

Three stars for having decent equipment and pool. As far as LA Fitness goes, however, this is the least pleasant of their gyms around. This gym is 5 min. from me and I drive 30 minutes to Temecula at least 3 times a week to avoid it.

First thing: Music is WAY too loud. It is virtually impossible to listen to my own music with headphones unless turned up 100%. When I inquired, was told the decision of "corporate." This is weird. Why would corporate want this particular gym to be 20% louder than all other LA Fitness gyms? I've been to 5 other LA Fitness gyms in the past two weeks and all have reasonable volume for the music - just like all other gyms I've worked out at for the past 20+ years. No other gym I've ever experienced is this loud. Corporate obviously doesn't want that. Corporate wants uniformity. This is an error of some sort, that no one is either bothering to fix, or simply does not understand.

Second thing: Culture there is not good. Weights are never even close to properly racked - scattered and adding time to workout while one hunts up and down the entire wall for the weights you're looking for (again, not the same anywhere else). People camp out on machines - even when the machine is the only one of it's kind there - for literally up to 30 minutes, sitting on the machine between sets and fiddling with their cell phones. The first time I asked a young lady if I could "work in" which is standard as long as I've been working out, she acted as though I'd asked her to dance and quickly pretended I was not actually standing there. Worst gym I've ever attended. Seriously giving me cancel thoughts. Too bad: literally every other LA Fitness gym I've worked out at is not just fine - generally excellent. I recently rejoined LA Fitness and overall am very glad I did. Everyone is different but for me I appreciate how easy it is to navigate the equipment, exercise stations, and circuits. It’s simple, straightforward and offers me easy choices on how I want my routine for the day to go. My one caveat is this new thing (to me) called machine hoarding. There were 2 rear felt/fly machines and 1 was out of service (it happens so no big deal). My issue with the 1 that was not broken is that it was on the “someone put their keys on the machine to hold their spot” deal. So I moved onto another machine and came back and guess what? A different set of keys and a cell phone were now holding the spot while this time the person was on another machine entirely. The member came over and I hoped to at least work in (she does 1 set and I do the same then trade out again), but not today. So I worked machines (for a second time) around the one I wanted until she, her keys, and her cell phone finished. Now please understand I can’t and don’t have an issue with someone working on any machine, and I even understand if someone does not want to work in due to their health concerns, but I am kind of challenged about me or anyone else having to wait behind a set of keys and a cell phone. This is my home gym, but my work requires that I travel a lot. So I have visited several LA Fitness locations. This location is by far my favorite. Yes, the location (and therefore the equipment) is newer; but the cleanliness and presentation of the gym is what makes me so fond. Every time I go (no matter what day or time) the cleaning team is working tirelessly to do the less-than-enjoyable work to make my gym nice. I love how big the free weight area is. The dumbbells include .5's (i.e. 17.5, 22.5) which not all locations have. And there are plenty of racks and Smith's. I love Cherie, who teaches the Tues/Thurs 11am Yoga class. And I love that the receptionists take the time to become acquainted with the regulars. My only criticism is more for corporate: Some of the tactics you impose on your employees to use to sign people up can be borderline harassment. I'm logical enough to know this is not an employee issue per se. This is a corporate training issue. Please remember that first timers are insecure, nervous, and unsure. Making them parade around the gym, weigh themselves, divulge personal goals, and try equipment in front of people can be very nerve-wracking. This should not be an absolute for every single sales rep to do with new guests. Just my opinion. More specifically though, I love this location. And I'm happy to go 6...
