Miami Seaplane Base — Local services in Miami

It's gone now! The crash of the Chalk's Seaplane pretty much brought the business to a halt. But as a kid this was one of the few places we could go and watch planes taking off next to cruise ships loading with passengers who had money enough to do what we could NOT afford to do.

From a photographers standpoint, this is one of the best places to photograph the skyline of Miami, Florida. The location itself is Watson Island. Developers have taken over the area, so you can't even get to the water anymore from here.

Hier starteten früher die Wasserflugzeuge Grumman G-73T Turbine Mallard der Chalk's Ocean Airways in Richtung Bahamas.

Leider nahm diese Ära mit dem Entzug der Transportlizens seitens der Amerikanischen Luftaufsicht ein Ende. Grund war die schlechte Wartung der Maschinen und damit einhergehend der Absturz eines dieser Typen vor der Hafenausfahrt von Miami. Diese Maschine kam da allerdings aus dem Norden von Fort Lauderdale. Schön war es zu sehen, wie diese Maschinen von der Betonrampe herunterfahren ist und dann im Hafenbecken von Miami neben den Kreuzfahrtschiffen zum Anheben beschleunigt hat. Dabei schwang auch immer ein wenig Wehmut und Neid mit, auf Diejenigen, die mit dieser Maschine geflogen sind und auch noch auf die Bahamas...
