I can't even describe how upset I am with UPMC East. My fiancé and I rushed our 3 year old son there because it was close and he only needed his elbow "popped" back into place(nursemaids elbow) and this is where I took him last time it happened years ago. This was not the first time this happened to my son so I knew what was wrong immediately.
After finally getting into the room, I explained everything to the nurse. She insisted it was his wrist and ordered an x-ray. When the x-ray came back, she said that they couldn't find anything but to call pediatrics ortho and see them within 3-5 days. I then retold her that my son could not move his arm. She then proceeded to bend my child's arm all types of ways (note that my sons forearm is dislocated) and said "I can move his arm from his shoulder and his elbow so it's his wrist". My son is very shy around people he does not know but when she turned his arm like he was shaking hands with someone he screamed "ow" and "stop it now" and smacked her hand with his other hand. I knew right then she was wrong but didn't argue. She put a splint on his arm and left.
Another nurse came in and gave my son Tylenol and discharged us. She was in the room when I told my fiancé that I'm taking our son to Children's because last week someone we knew took their child to UPMC East for his wrist and it ended up being broken after they got a second opinion. She became very snippy saying that Children's will do the same exact thing that they did and there is no reason to go and to just make the appointment with ortho. She left and came back again after telling the other nurse our concerns and said that the other nurse said to make an appointment with ortho. She then said very rudely, "but do what you want but we are rarely ever wrong," and left.
After we left, I took my son to Children's Hospital. When we were being triaged and asked our reason for coming, I explained. The man shook his head and took the splint off of my sons wrist and said it was his elbow and the splint was doing nothing for him at all. When we got into the room, the doctor fixed my sons elbow within seconds!!! It was in fact a nursemaids elbow.
I am beyond furious with UPMC East for so many reasons! The first thing is that they should have known what a nursemaids elbow was. It is very common! They wouldn't even listen to us. Second, I'm furious because we didn't see a doctor! We saw a nurse and a certified registered nurse! That's fine and all if she knew what she was talking about but she did not. After I voiced my concerns and mentioned I wanted a second opinion from Children's, the doctor should have come in and examined himself! The third reason why I'm so upset is that the nurse was so snippy with us when I said I'm taking my son to Children's. They made me feel like I was dumb for going there. They made us doubt ourselves about the health and well being of our son for not wanting to just follow up with ortho! If we blindly trusted them, our son would have been in extreme and UNNECESSARY pain until we could have gotten an appointment.
This ER was terrible and I will never go back. They were unprofessional and believed that they could never make a mistake and that we were idiots for not...
Read moreCame to the ER to get treatment for a possible rabies exposure. Waited in the waiting room for 5+ hours before being taken to a room which was not entirely surprising given it was a Friday night/Saturday morning but annoying none the less given the waiting room was fairly sparse. I was told after my initial treatment I would need to go to the infusion center for my next vaccine but since the infusion center is closer on the weekend I would need to go to the ER for treatments 3 and 4. I was handed discharge papers in regards to my treatment and how to file this claim under workers comp since my possible exposure happened at my job. The paperwork I received for that was completely incorrect. On it, it states to call a number to start the claim on UPMC’s end and all it said was required for this claim was my employers name, number and address as well as their insurance info “if possible”. I did not have that information but since it said “if possible” I figured it should be fine. I was wrong. In total I think I talked to 5 reps for UPMC. All more unhelpful than the last until the final rep actually knew how to do her job and was able to find all the information necessary. Going back to the treatments Everything went smoothly for my second and third treatments but when I arrived for my 4th treatment I was told there were no orders in for me and asked if I had a prescription for the vaccine. I told the person I spoke with that my prescription was taken at the infusion center during my second treatment but I was assured all the orders for my following treatments were put in at that time. They ended up having to check me in. I was then taken to a room and told that my vaccine would be brought up from the pharmacy soon. Shortly after, I had a gentleman come to my room, checked the check in paperwork that was made today after I arrived and say he saw I was here for a rabies shot and asked if I had “my papers.” Other than the prescription, that I had already stated to the first nurse, was taken from me at the infusion center I have no idea what “papers” they are even talking about. This has been a frustrating and infuriating experience. The only reason I gave two stars instead of one is because there are a few kind people that work here who are not a part of the problem, my nurse Ally and the receptionist being two of the kind and compassionate people, but as a whole UPMC has some major adjustments they need to make with their emergency department as well as their...
Read moreI arrived at 7 pm and signed in on the kiosk. It instructed me to have a seat and someone would be with me shortly. It was pretty crowded so I anticipated a long wait. After 1.5 hrs passed I was concerned that I had not been triaged. I asked the lady with dirty nails and dry wig if my name had been called since I had used the restroom. Her reply was "I didn't hear that name."
After another 30 min passes I ask dirty nail/dry wig lady again. No, again. So I ask what place am I in. She tells me I'm not registered. I cannot believe I've spent two hours waiting and I'm not registered. So I ask what the problem is with the kiosk, she says she doesn' know, she's making a call about it. OK but what about me waiting. I was not pushed into the right place. She said you just registered. Also a younger girl is saying they have problems with that kiosk.
I'm livid at this point and let them know. Duh, why wasn't I told that? I could have used another one. I asked for their supervisors name and number. I'm finally triaged at 9:30. I call and leave a message for Customer Relations. At 10:00 I call the main desk and get transferred to the ER Director who tells me she'll escalate it to their supervisor. I lay down and take a quick nap. I call again and hang up because I'm upset. Useless. OK get ready.....
Around 11 the triage nurse comes out an points at me . Two of three UPMÇ Officers approach me and ask me did I call. I say yes I called three times. I explain the situation. They tell me it won't help me its a 6 hour wait. They also tell me to tell my boyfriend to stop calling. I sit for another few minutes and realize they are going to make me waiting a very, very long time because every one who came after 9:30 has been called but not me. I leave.
STAY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM UPMC EAST ER - UNPROFESSIONAL, INCOMPETENT IDIOTS!!!!
I AM A UPMC EMPLOYEE AND WILL NEVER, EVER GO TO THIS PLACE AGAIN. ...
