Main takeaway, if you need help with an idea/design - do yourself a favour and book a consultation with Jae. He helped me fully realize my vision for my two sleeve pieces and I’m forever grateful every time I look at his amazing/beautiful/brillaint artwork on my body.
Dec 2021, I originally went in for a small matching tattoo with a friend because the shop was in a convenient location and our tattoos turned out perfect. While there, I looked through Jae’s portfolio and fell in love with his line work and shading. I talked to him about creating a large arm/sleeve piece, he measured out the space that I wanted to fill and then I sent him my ideas. Jan 2022, he began work on my sleeve piece, completing it after 2 sessions, I absolutely loved it. 12 months later I wanted to add to it, so I went back in Dec 2022 and talked to Jae and we came up with the idea of some complimentary additions.
Feb 2025, I wanted some more permanent artwork of Jae’s before I left NYC. I went in for a consult and had a grand vision of several different ideas and didn’t know how to tie it all together. I knew I wanted half of my upper back, shoulder, arm and clavicle but was unsure of where all the ideas would go and fit together. I sat for 3 sessions to get this brilliant, beautiful design. Jae was excited and enthusiastic to share his ideas every time I came in for the next part, and I was so excited to receive this full piece. I brought several different ideas to him that I wanted to incorporate and not only did he create the most beautiful designs, but he helped me fully realize my vision and dream. The photos are from this recent large piece.
Pros: Best healing of every tattoo I’ve ever received, and I have 20+ different styles/sizes on my body. His lines look brand new, even years later, no fading or breaks in the lines. He’s so collaborative and creative to work with. The shop energy & vibes are great. The art is amazing and the price is so reasonable. He’s been doing this for a couple decades, so he knows what’s up.
I have recommended this shop to so many people, I can’t say enough good things and only want others to experience the wonderful journey that I had with Jae and Electric Lotus.
If you’re on the fence about an idea or a design, book a consult. His work speaks for itself but you also won’t be disappointed by the conversation you’ll...
Read moreElectric Lotus is my favorite tattoo studio in New York City. I've gotten work done at a number of solid studios around the city but since my first appointment at Electric Lotus, I haven't ventured anywhere else. Jae and Anthony are both amazing artists and I have a killer time sitting with either of them.
Jae, the owner of the studio, has tattooed me four times and I can easily say that out of my 16 tattoos Jae's work is my favorite. I am always impressed by his ability to translate abstract ideas into art and by his versatility at tattooing diverse styles and designs. My own tattoos are all in black and grey, which Jae has executed perfectly, but I have both watched him tattoo others and seen his healed designs, and can attest to the incredible quality of his work in color as well. He has an intuitive sense of color scheme and application, resulting in beautiful, timeless tattoos that make a statement and endure. Jae works fast and with precision. Each of my tattoos has healed well and remain looking fresh and crisp.
As for the experience of visiting Electric Lotus, I absolutely love coming here. Walking in, Jae and co. are warm, welcoming, and attentive. Despite the high popularity of the shop, appointments start on time and once they do you have the artists' full attention. Jae and Anthony are both great about making sure you are completely satisfied with their rendering of your design and the tattoo placement before getting to work on your body--unlike at other tattoo studios I've visited where I felt rushed and as though something was lost in translation. Everyone at Electric Lotus is a consummate professional who truly cares about the integrity of their work and the joy of their clients. Also, the shop itself is beautiful. The walls are hung with all sorts of gorgeous artworks and Jae has a terrific floor-to-ceiling bookshelf full of art books and references. It is always a pleasure to chat with Jae and Anthony while they work as they are both kind and fascinating human beings.
All in all, I just love being here and working with these dudes and recommend them to everyone I know who expresses interest in tattoos or compliments mine. Whether you know exactly what you want or come in with only a vague idea, you'll leave Electric Lotus feeling looked after and itching to return for...
Read moreOne of my best friends and I spontaneously went to get matching tattoos on a Friday in February. She happened to pick Electric Lotus based off of the positive reviews online. Every step in this process, from calling them to the healing of the tattoo itself, was a great experience I'd recommend to anyone.
First of all, we picked a stereotypically "basic girl" design. Neither of the tattoo artists responded judgmentally (at any point during our interactions). This was nice in the moment, but even more impressive after seeing their portfolios online. The complex designs they are capable of would make me conclude small, fine line tattoos were beneath them. Nonetheless, they were nothing but professional the entire time.
Secondly, since the timespan between idea to get a tattoo and getting our estimates was about 45 minutes, I started to get nervous when the stencil was placed on my ribs (should mention this was my first tattoo). However, Anthony made me feel extremely comfortable, explained the process before starting, helped me control my breath and it was honestly not that painful (again, I'm a tattoo newbie, so take that with a grain of salt). Since sharing this story with a few other tattoo-ed friends I've realized this narrative is more rare than I imagined. Many of my friend's first-tattoo stories were sprinkled with scare tactics at the walk-in shops they frequented. So happy that didn't happen to us.
Lastly - after getting tattooed - I've watched a billion Inked YouTube videos. The main themes of these videos is that (1) tattoos are art and the investment is worth it and (2) do your research. In hindsight, I should have done a ton more research considering the possibility/reality that tattoos poorly done can heal terribly when the quality is not there. Thank God I lucked out on this shop, because my tattoo was barely itchy in the healing process, never scabbed, and the lines today look nice and clean. My parents always told me "Tattoos are like chips, you can't just have one" and after my experience at this shop I definitely believe...
