Was happy to find out the store was still open. Saw hangar was $8.99–the prices were right there on the wall when you walk in. Got 2.36 lbs. When I heard the total, I knew something was amiss. $24.78 is not 2.36 x $8.99. I mentioned that I was charged the wrong amount and they said the price was wrong on the board and proceeded to take the price FOR THAT ONE ITEM ONLY off the board. The interaction devolved from there. They gave me back an additional $1.66 in change, for a new total price of $23.12 ($9.80/lb). Still not right. I told them as much. They said the price on the board was $9.99. Huh? It was just up on the board, and specifically ordered the hangar because it was $8.99 and I thought it a decent price. A customer who came in the store after me then had the gall to intervene in my business and said if I didn’t want the meat I should just leave. I sharply told her to stay out of my business. No profanity or yelling; just a pointed rebuke. The new owner, a longtime employee apparently, then said I didn’t need to talk to her that way. I told him that my business was none of hers and she should’ve stayed silent in this matter. I told him that I was going to promote his business to my network, but after his defense of that meddling woman and his charging me a different price than what was advertised, he would no longer have my support. He said he didn’t care. And the woman said he has his long-time regulars and my lack of support doesn’t matter. I walked out the store, still shortchanged, because I didn’t want to continue to be in that hostile environment any longer. I hope the new owner learns a lesson. I’ll...
Read moreFlorence is my go-to butcher. A throwback (sawdust included) in what is still the most authentically Italian neighborhood in Manhattan, Florence is a veteran butcher that knows it's business as well as anyone. Want to call in your order? Done. Want the meat portioned and packed so you can freeze it? Easy. Customer service does go a long way and they do a good job, but for God's sake they're a butcher. I've only gotten steak here thus far but I will be expanding soon. I most often get the Newport steak, just like everyone else. Around $11/lb for a steak that's aged for 30 days is too good to pass up. If you come here, you should be ordering some if just to try it once. My go-to order is 2 lbs of this cut into 3 pieces, ready to go in the freezer. Their stuff has no preservatives so cook it the same day or freeze it. I look forward to trying...
Read moreOne of the longstanding gems in the West Village, this is one of my absolute favorite butchers in the city. The quality of meats they curate are top notch and their hot Italian sausages are second to none! An authentic New York butcher with saw dust on the floor to boot! I also can’t say enough about the owner and staff. Maria used to run the business and sold it to a longtime employee who is a staple of the shop. It’s so nice to see a longstanding and dedicated employee take over the business and preserve this historic place - you get the same great service and product that this shop has always been known for. Whether it’s a rack of lamb, steak chops, sausages, or freshly sliced bacon, this place is a 10/10. Couldn’t recommend more highly! Buy local and support this...
