Would give 0 stars if possible. Came here last night to finish off the evening celebrating my birthday, and had a horrible experience with the bouncer. I had a friend with me visiting NYC who was also from North Carolina, and the bouncer let her in but claimed my ID was fake. I told him I just turned 25 and showed him my credit card to match the ID name, but he refused to allow me in the bar and became extremely hostile and rude. I asked what other documentation I could possibly provide him to get him to let me in, and he said nothing would get me into the bar and that I needed to “get out” immediately. Another friend asked to speak to a manager, and the bouncer became even ruder and claimed that he was the manager, which was clearly a lie. He was so rude to the point I left in tears, and it was especially upsetting that he let my white friend in with the same exact ID type I had but refused to allow me into the bar. The group left very upset after having our night and my birthday celebration ruined. I feel bad writing this review because I’m sure the owner of this bar and the other employees are lovely, hardworking people, but the bouncer’s blatant racism and rudeness were absolutely vile and should not be excused. I would not recommend coming here if you are a...
Read moreThis is my go to spot when I'm in the West Village. $8 pitcher happy hours? Yes. $3 dollar drinks? YES. NACHOS! YES! I'm sold...but it gets better. This place is kind of like a franchise, because the owners all split shares of the company and allow new investors to open up shop at a different place in the Manhattan area. For example, if you ever been to Hair Of The Dog in the Lower East Side, and said to yourself, "Hey this looks like 13th Step in the East Village..." then you probably are one of the most aware people on Earth, because it's true they're all owned by the same company! They sell the same thing, but the big difference is the ambiance. Down The Hatch is quite small and fills up quick, especially after the work rush, and can feel like a college bar, because it's close to NYU. Overall it's a great place to meet a friend, grab some drinks, stumble to the Highline, bother some German tourist, and feel like you...
Read moreWe hit several other bars and eateries and were looking for more spots. Upon talking to some locals outside of one of the bars, they mentioned that we HAD to check this place out. They said it was called "Down the Hatch" and they had the best wings in NYC there. We checked it out on a map, and it was not far from where we were. All I can say is, WOW. They locals were not lying about this place. Its in the basement of a row of shops. You walk in and the first thing you notice is the atmosphere. There are people everywhere and they are all having a good time. We walk up to the bar to order some drinks and much to our surprise, they had awesome drink specials. Anyone who's ever been out and about in NYC know this is a big deal. The staff were friendly and attentive. As directed, we tried the chicken wings and they were phenomenal. If you're in the West Village, definitely make this one...
