A "gourmet" grocery store with hot food, a salad bar, baked goods, sushi, and deli sandwiches. A little pricey.
This place is next door to my office, so I eat lunch from here a lot. I usually do a sandwich, but I've eaten a lot of food off the bars. You'd think it would get boring, but they have enough variety and they change things up frequently so I'm always finding something I like.
Chicken salad sandwiches and wraps are probably my favorites, but I always check the bars first because they are adding new stuff all the time.
The baked stuff is hit or miss. We've tried a few cakes for special occasions and have been consistently disappointed- especially considering their high prices. The gourmet cookies are the same way. I suspect that a lot of that stuff might sit around too long.
For general grocery items, I've caught them with both higher and lower prices than my neighborhood Key foods for some things. I've actually found a few things that were cheaper at my dega. Prices are all over the place.
The manager-type guys can be a little short and gruff, but the checkout girls all know me and are the greatest. A lot of days I feel like I'm the only person in there speaking English, though.
Time for lunch. I'll be the guy picking over the roasted Brussels sprouts on the salad bar....
Read moreLocated in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn at Montague Street in the Brooklyn Heights section is Fresh Start Marketplace. This was my first time at the Fresh Start Marketplace location. I was trying the hot bar for the first time after reading the reviews. I ordered a surprise bag from the app called TooGoToGo to see if the surprise bag. Upon walking into the store it's a wonderful layout with wide selection of organic items, and many departments that working hard make the store excellent. The staff are amazing, professional and fast. After 6pm all product in the hot bar for 50% off the price. I request to get a surprise bags that order and was greeted by the manager of the hot bar who was very professional and told us to check out the selections and take as much food from the hot bar. The food smells wonderful and tastes amazing. I tired the Chicken Masala, Morocco Chicken, Roasted potato wedges, turkey, Spanish Chicken, Yellow Rice with beans, and so many more wide selections. I recommend this store for grocery shopping and check out the hot bar through the TooGoodToGo app on the Google Play Store or App Store. Also, check out the hot bar after 6pm to check out the hot bar for amazing food at half...
Read moreI've been shopping here since the day they opened, and it's had its ups and downs as far as management, staff and cleanliness are concerned. Things appear stable at the moment-o.k., but not wonderful. (The store changed hands a couple of years ago.) Groceries are high-priced, but it's close to the Borough Hall subway stop and many people pop in on the way home. The deli and salad bar are pretty good, although again expensive. You can find good prices for produce, but have to be selective. The cakes and pastries are often not fresh and can be passed by without missing anything. Weekends they do a lot of business with families buying lunch on the way to Brooklyn Bridge Park. I have never known anyone to buy catered meals from them. The choices are limited and...
