Two minutes in the air doesn’t sound like much until you’re dangling above the East River in a red box with fifty strangers and the smell of someone’s everything bagel. The tram hums along like it’s in no hurry, sliding between midtown and Roosevelt Island while the city unfolds below you like a cheap magic trick that still works every time.

You don’t take this to get somewhere fast. You take it because the subway can’t give you views like this and the ferry can’t suspend you in midair long enough to wonder what would happen if the cable snapped. If that sounds grim, maybe you don’t understand the charm of New York transportation.

Morning Grab coffee from Sutton CafĂ© on 60th and let it burn your tongue while you wait in line. The line is part of it. You listen to people talk about work, about brunch, about a cat that refuses to eat. It’s accidental theater.

Midday Pay your MetroCard fare, step inside, and snag a spot by the glass. You’ll pass so close to apartment windows you can almost see what’s for lunch. Don’t wave. This isn’t Disneyland.

Afternoon On Roosevelt Island, walk the waterfront down to Four Freedoms Park. It’s sharp and geometric and makes you feel like you’ve wandered into a different city. The skyline across the river looks like a postcard somebody left out in the rain.

Evening Come back at dusk. The tram glides past the city with the lights just starting to flicker on, the water catching every bit of it. The ride ends too soon, which is how you know it’s worth doing.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway doesn’t pretend to be more than it is. It takes you from here to there and gives you a view that makes you want to stay suspended a...

The Roosevelt Island Tramway offers one of the most unique and scenic experiences in New York City, providing aerial views of the East River, Manhattan skyline, and the iconic Queensboro Bridge. This tram ride feels like a hidden gem, offering both tourists and locals a quick escape from the city’s hustle while delivering breathtaking panoramic views.

The tram departs from 59th Street and 2nd Avenue and takes just under 5 minutes to reach Roosevelt Island, but the journey is unforgettable. As the tram ascends, you’re treated to stunning views of Midtown Manhattan and the East River waterfront—a perfect photo opportunity, especially during sunset or at night when the city lights illuminate the skyline. Best of all, the tram uses the same fare system as the subway, making it an affordable adventure with your MetroCard.

Once on Roosevelt Island, visitors can explore landmarks like the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, the historic Smallpox Hospital ruins, and the beautiful waterfront promenades offering peaceful views of Manhattan. The island’s tranquil atmosphere is a striking contrast to the bustling city just across the river.

For the best experience, ride the tram during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and secure a window spot. Whether you're looking for a unique way to see the city or seeking a quiet retreat on Roosevelt Island, the Tramway offers a memorable and scenic experience that showcases New York from a whole new...
