Was somewhat skeptical given the predominately negative reviews, but decided to give it a try with the free trial given its convenient location and very attractive price ($40/month). The equipment is definitely not new, but it is well maintained and cleaned often. Every time I have worked out I have seen at least one employee going around wiping down all the machines. I have yet to encounter a broken piece of equipment.
The cardio area upstairs has all the basic equipment (treadmills, elliptical, stationary bikes) and I have never had to wait for a machine. The one major drawback is that despite each machine having a personal TV, they don't receive cable, so there really isn't anything to watch on them unless you like watching CSPAN or QVC.
The free weight area downstairs is a little cramped, being that it is a converted basement, but it does the trick. You do have to be a little careful with where you stand if you are doing any overhead lifts, to ensure that you don't hit a pipe or another ceiling extrusion. The dumbbells are a little old, but are functional. It gets a little crowded during peak hours, but not to the point where you have to wait more than 5 minutes for a station.
The location does not offer any fitness classes, but it does offer a free personal training session with a new membership. I dealt with 3 sales reps - 1 who was very nice and signed me up for the free trial, 1 who approached me mid-workout and proceeded to lie to me multiple times, and 1 who signed me up for my real membership. Needless to say 2 of the 3 were great. Just be aware of the sales rep who is overly aggressive, and will lie multiple times to make a sale. I caught on to his lies early on and refused to deal with him going forward. Don't pay any joining fees, or more than $40 a month - they have the power to waive all the other fees.
Overall, Synergy is a great gym if you have reasonable expectations. You are not going to get the same perks as a $100+/month gym, but you will be able to get a thorough workout at a reasonable price. I tried the free trial at NYSC a few blocks away, and actually liked Synergy better. It was significantly less crowded, and had a better overall layout. If you look at the dates at most of the reviews on here, they are from a few years ago. I can't speak to what the gym used to be like, from what I have experienced, it has been very good, and an excellent value...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI loved this gym, came here daily since July 2023 but cancelled my membership because I moved but I miss it dearly. As someone else mentioned it's a no frills gym, especially if you're just looking to lift weights and use the cardio machines at an affordable price compared to the other gyms in the neighborhood (they also have a heavy bag downstairs!). Here are some of the reasons why it was a great fit for me, and may be a great fit for you: It was rarely crowded whenever I went (usually 10am-1pm), even during times when I went during peak hours or in the evening when it was more packed, I was always able to get my workout in without feeling rushed. I felt like it was less crowded than some of the other gyms I initially tried out in the neighborhood (NYSC, Equinox). Nice, friendly staff and members who understand basic gym etiquette/common sense. It was nice to be able to workout here and not worry about people recording themselves and ending up in their social media post or having to deal with micro-aggressions, entitlement/ego complexes, creeps or harassment. I felt safe, comfortable and motivated by others during my time here. Decent amount of equipment and well maintained, while it doesn't have as much or as wide of an array when compared to NYSC or Equinox, it had everything I needed for doing free-weight exercises, machines and cardio. Also, I feel like even though other places have newer equipment there would always be something broken or dirty to use. During my time here I don't think I ever saw any of machines/equipment break, I also always see the staff cleaning so everything felt very clean.
Even though this gym was great for me I can see some reasons why it might not be for other people. One reason is that this gym is kind of on the older side when compared to the other gyms I mentioned before, in the summer the A/C's would sometimes leak. Again, it didn't really bother me that much, the A/C still worked and kept the gym very cool and like I mentioned I see them cleaning all the time. The space is also smaller than other gyms, however again this didn't really bother me since the gym was rarely crowded. It also might not be for you if you want extra amenities like a sauna/steam-room, showers, etc, however they did have personal trainers and boxing I believe. Overall, I really like this place and if I'm ever back in the neighborhood I'd sign up...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI had a bad experience at this gym today that I'd like to share with everyone. At 8:45pm an elderly lady shouted, "The gym is closed, everyone out." I said I thought the gym closed at 9pm and she said, "I've decided to close it early today." I asked who she was, i.e. her position at the gym, and that if she wasn't the manager I would like to speak to the manager. She walked upstairs. She came down with another man with a beard and baseball cap. I don't know if he was staff or a gym member. I saw him working out earlier, maybe he was a patron? He was not wearing a Synergy shirt or any identification. He said the lady I spoke to earlier had stated that I cursed at her. I told him this was not true. I asked him his name and he would not give it to me, he asked me my name and I gave it to him. I explained every other Saturday that I came, the gym was open until 9pm and if there was a change, it should be stated on the website and on the front door. I plan my workouts for a certain length of time and I need to know how much time I have. He was initially very rude to me and approached in a physically threatening manner, but then after hearing me he apologized and said I could get a "refund." But when I told him I would have to report the early closing to the manager, he swore at me using the "F" word several times. I left and he said, "Have a nice week." What kind of business operates this way? Not one that I want to give my hard earned money to. The only thing I could think of is that they are going out of business soon and simply don't...
