If any review can convince you NOT to sign a contract with this chain, let this one be it.
It is in their contract that if their payments stop withdrawing from your account for any reason (ie. card expired, card number changed), they will NOT notify you. They're just keep charging you and then send you to collections automatically.
They still require you to send account cancellations via certified mail. Fine. But then they insist that they never received the certified mail and continue to charge you anyway. If you don't continue to pay, again you'll be sent to collections.
When you are sent to collections you will pay more than 4x what you owe, including fees that have no source and collection agency fees.
There is no corporate office to call and when you call the location, there is no manager available. People at the front desk offer no help and cannot even give you an appropriate fax number for you to send your proof of cancellation. Four calls just to get a fax number! (Ironic; since they can sign you up for an account with their eyes closed. Swiping credit cards is a game to these people.)
Don't bother calling because they will ignore your number. (In my case, to fax certified mail proof). They will stop answering your calls completely when your number shows on caller ID. Mind I called once to explain the situation and all other times to get a correct fax number.
Note: Front desk guy, Simon is unsympathetic and actually laughed at one point after I explained the unfairness. Seems they get upset patrons often.
I'm a difficult person to upset. Rarely do I get hostile and become so offended that I need to actively seek out a business to write a terrible review but in this case, it was necessary and my only option.
This place robbed me blind. They desperately need to go out of business. Even then, it won't be enough to undo what they do to hard-working people.
I've always looked at these reviews before and thought the negatives were special cases but they aren't. Don't plan to join this gym if you think there's an off-chance you may...
Read moreI’ve been coming here for about a year. The staff at this gym has some nice people. Didn’t like when signing up they’re very pushy with sales but I get it it’s a business just be sure to really stand your ground. What they did push on me was personal training sessions, but they do hook it up with discounts and I don’t regret getting them since the trainers here are very thoughtful and work to meet your goals and I learned a lot from my sessions and saw results almost instantly so I do recommend them. I don’t like how the gym is very outdated. There’s always the custodian around cleaning or doing maintenance and some of the machines have been replaced but there’s some worn out equipment here where although it’s all functional, is just a bit dismal especially for how much I pay each month. There’s also sometimes an issue with air quality and temperature; there’s a strong smell of sweat at times and the locker rooms are often freezing. I also do not like how there are rules posted but no enforcement. You’ll seldom see the men here wipe down their equipment, there will be people congregating around equipment and rendering it out of commission for 30 minutes at a time because they’re on their phone or just hanging out with their friends and despite staff frequently being around the floor nothing is done to make sure things are moving smoothly for other clients. They offer group fitness classes and I understand they were paused because of COVID and they were brought back last spring, but it’s about 2 classes each week. I wish they offered more especially like a yoga or Pilates class, considering NSYC has more and costs less. The outdated schedule on their website is full of interesting classes so I hope they bring those back since they were once offered. Synergy is open 24 hours during the week and rarely crowded to the point I have to wait for equipment which is an incredible advantage over the other gyms nearby. I think membership is about $10-15 above what it’s worth but it’s a decent choice especially for...
Read moreI just had the worst experience with Bernice. She insulted my intelligence, would not let me speak to a manager or provide me a manager's number. She was even going to hang up on me.
I cancelled my membership per the contract with a USPS Certified Mail and Confirmation. I received the receipt confirming they had received the termination letter. I phoned them up today to confirm everything was done according to contract and they would be removing my credit card information from their records. She was extremely rude, told me I didn't understand what 30 days meant. If I cancel on March 16th, they received the letter March 18th, 30 days would be April 17, 2015. I made a payment on March 15th and she told me I had one more payment on April 15th for a full month. Why on earth would I have to pay for another 30 days? A gym membership is like cable, it's paid upfront. With the cancellation, I should only be responsible for TWO days! SERIOUSLY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.
And to top it off, the last day I ever stepped foot into that gym, I picked up a supposedly clean towel and there was blood stains on it. I would recommend staying away from this gym and spending the extra money to join elsewhere.
And here is an update... I can say they are the slimmest of all out there. Pemba Sherpa the manager comes off all nice and resolves everything, reverses the charges and you think everything is great. He didn't like my yelp review or the update and kept calling and telling me to update it. I still experienced what I did and believed people should know it. Today, he called again and I didn't answer. A couple hours later he called again and my BF answered and he told him to stop harassing me. I log into my bank account and they ILLEGALLY are charging my card. STAY FAR AWAY!!!!! I will make sure these thefts do not...
