I really am glad I found this place via IG. I was looking for a place for my fiancé to get his hair cut in a bespoke way. We need to have a master barber in our references for when we start preparing for our wedding. Anyways, when booking I opted for the Well Kept cut so he could get both clippers and scissors. I also did not know who to chose, so I opted for any barber to be chosen by the business. Anyways, we were running late but the barber was more than understanding. I also should have remembered that Astoria doesn't have parking, so keep that in mind when commuting here. Opt for an Uber or for mass transit or come with enough time prior to the appointment to find parking. So when we arrived, Romelo came down the stairs and he took our temperatures at our foreheads or for myself, my wrist. We were good to go with our masks and sanitizers. We already periodically test, quarantine and take precautions when we go out anyways. So once we got through that step, Romelo allowed me to sit in the seat behind my fiancé so I can see the process. He went above and beyond. The conversation we all had, the music, the vibe of the place it was all comfortable and clean. Watching the whole process was amazing. He also finished with a razor and explained that other barbershops in the city do not do that. It really is like the vintage experience because back in the day they did use razors and whatnot. Romelo even washed his hair to see his hair pattern and how the top of his hair fell forward. He also gave us advice to start preparing his hair to look the way it did in the photo we gave to Romelo as a reference. He also gave us a brand to use for his specific hair needs, since I wasn't knowledgeable about his type of hair. He also told us we must go once a month, which I am definitely budgeting as a gift for my fiancè. My fiancé look so handsome and wonderful. I am so glad we found them. We will be...
Read moreI been going to Ruben for many years now and followed him when he opened this gorgeous barbershop which he is constantly updating and making it more detailed so every time you notice something different. It gives a speakeasy vibe even showcasing barbershop antiques.
I prefer using their system which is by appointment, which locks in your prefer barber. They have a easy to use app (Tip: Book beginning of the month). I say this because I read a review before how the app does not work because it shows no availability, that is because they are that good at what they do and get booked up immediately. The app will also show you other barbers available. When Ruben is not available, I go to Jose, also known as Thetattedbarber. Another reason is you choose the services on the app and the total price is shown so no surprises at the end of your cut.
They do have walk ins, but that is up to your discretion.
Ruben's attention to detail and passion for perfection is what makes the cost worth it. I can tell you from past experience with other barbers, I would have to come home and finish the job, at Well Kept, I can go straight to my next destination knowing my cut is complete.
Pros: Easy to use App. Skillful Master Barbers. Attentive. Very Clean. Professionals Cons: They book quickly. Parking is tough, give yourself time to find parking. there are free but mostly...
Read moreNote: i’m a pretty exacting customer with really high standards. So my review might not be relevant to other guys who are just looking for a simple haircut.
Overall, Not a great experience. As a walk-in, I was assigned to the newest barber (there for two weeks). Coincidentally, when I looked at the barber-certifications posted in the front, nowhere was my barbers name listed. He didn’t even have any Barbacide in his kit. The resulting shave led to multiple nicks and cuts (photo below) and I’m praying nothing gets infected. The hair cut involved very little scissor-work, which isn’t a big deal by itself. He was a nice kid and was motivated. He just didn’t seem to have much support. So I gave him a good tip.
I paid $95 ( not including tip) for the full treatment: haircut, shave, steaming. The hot towels were not very hot or fragrant (most barbers use an essential oil). The water in their steam machine was brown and looked like it hasn’t been changed in a very long time. The only discernible smell in the shop was takeout food (beans, I think). But the most disappointing thing is that they didn’t have anyone providing supervision to this new guy. That’s a clear indication of a leadership problem, and those are problems that don’t go away. In conclusion — For my money, I would probably go...
