After a quick search on google for places in NYC that repair game consoles, I came across a link to xcubicle's website. I clicked through the link and filled out a request for a quote, describing my problem in detail. I received a timely response from Suesan describing that my PS3 may be experiencing overheating issues and that xcubicle usually charges $100 ($20 diagnostic fee upfront) to fix this type of issue. To me, $100 sounded reasonable to restore my PS3, as opposed to purchasing a new one. Not to mention, their 60-day warranty sounded appealing.
As a result, I stopped by xcubicle on a Saturday and dropped off my PS3 and was told by the person working the window (you stand outside while they speak to you through a window) that my problem could be fixed after I paid $20 and he ran the "diagnostic. test"
Halfway through the week, I received a voicemail from an xcubicle employee saying that my PS3 could not be fixed, but that I could purchase a refurbished PS3 for $195. After doing some research online I came to the conclusion that $195 was a reasonable price, so I called xcubicle back and told them to reserve a refurbished PS3 as I planned on picking it up the upcoming Saturday.
When I showed up to pick up the refurbished PS3 I asked for my old PS3 back thinking I could sell it to someone who could use the working parts in order to make some money back. HOWEVER, I was told that the $195 price for the refurbished PS3 was contingent on xcubicle keeping my old PS3. Needless to say, this sounded pretty shady and it made me pretty angry. Upon hearing this, I asked the following questions - I've included their responses.
ME: What was wrong with my PS3 that it could not be fixed? xcubicle employee: I don't know what was specifically wrong, but sometimes they just cannot be fixed.
ME: Do you plan on reusing parts from my PS3? xcubicle employee: Yes, but only the lens, not all parts can be reused.
ME: If you plan on reusing my parts shouldn't I get a better price than $195 for a refurbished PS3? $195 is only at a slight discount to other refurbished PS3s online. xcubicle employee: I can't really negotiate, I'd have to ask my boss.
I then proceeded to ask the xcubicle employee to call his boss. The xcubicle employee went off somewhere in the back and then came back and told me he sent him an email. When I asked why he couldn't just call him, he said his boss is in another country, but that he would be in NYC later in April if I wanted to come back then.
After expressing my displeasure and accusing them of running a racket, I simply asked for my old PS3 back and left.
BOTTOM LINE: These guys are up to something. Contrary to what some other reviewers have posted, their process is NOT transparent at all and dealing with them left a very bad taste in my mouth. I cannot recommend their services. Deal with them at your own risk.
...as for myself, I'm off to see if they already took parts out of my old PS3 (they assured me they hadn't yet, but I'm a...
Read moreOutstanding customer service! (Update) I brung my ps4 here to get fixed last sunday due to my console not reading my games, I wanted the best service and seeing that this place has five stars I came here...my ps4 is very important to me being that my girlfriend got it for me as a Xmas gift last year, when I arrived I explained to one of the staff members what was the issue with my system, the guy said it would be $125 to fix the problem which is a good price, I wanted it done the same day so I paid a extra $25 for the express service same day fix... I dropped it off at 145 on the dot and was told it would be ready by 430-pm, during pickup i asked what was the problem regarding the system and the guy said it was my laser lens that needed to be replaced they than did the testing to make sure everything was up to part...the guy tested nba2k16 and it looked as if it worked with it reading the disc an all but he didn't actually play the game, he just put it in and I seen that it was reading so I was satisfied.when I got home I tried to play both (infinite warfare) and (cod black ops 3)which is the only two games I own but still it wouldn't let me play the games also it was making a crackle noise whenever I put the game inside, a noise that it never made before...it would read the disc but it would freeze during the process of it loading...so I called them and explained to them the situation and they told me to bring it back for a second look ...I know you guys are like get to the point already but keep reading its worth it lol...so when I arrived the second time I met a guy by the name of pat very friendly and cool btw, I explained what happened and right away they took it inside the shop to be tested again, when doing so they put in a game called (modern warfare) and to my surprise that particular game worked with no problem...no noises no freezing or anything in that matter, now when they put in (infinite warfare) it started to make the crackle noise I was talking about so pat gave me a refund for the $25 for the express service and told me to leave it and they'll call me when its ready..I'm not going to lie I was disappointed at first but the way they handled my issue was very professional and polite Outstanding customer service! Well to get to the point I picked up my ps4 yesterday and IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM ...they didn't really know what the problem was when I asked.....they said they just took it apart and put it back together, whatever they did it worked! So I will be coming back and telling all my friends about this spot! Thanks to pat and the team for...
Read moreSo I have actually gone to XCUBICLE twice for two separate issues regarding two separate consoles. I think the two biggest qualities about them are their speed and communication.
I had a New 3ds I wanted repaired in the span of a week so I could have it when going to a convention. I asked if it could be done within a week and it was. The repair concerned unresponsive buttons and c stick. When I brought the console in I was able to bring up additional issues at a moments notice and they were responsive in listening to my consoles issues. Within a week my system was finished and it worked perfectly.
Another system repair involved a New 3ds XL. I had unresponsive buttons and D-Pad and a busted cartridge slot. This time I wasn't able to go in person to pick up my system, but they were actually able to mail it back to me which was extremely convenient. Unfortunately a specific issue wasn't resolved but I was able to send it back and have it fixed with no additional charge. I didn't even have to go in person, I was just able to mail it to them.
I have a new issue with my New 3ds, the ribbon cable is busted and sometimes the system randomly shuts off with a popping noise so it's not related to any negligence to a previous repair. But it feels really comforting to know that, my issue with my console isn't too big of a deal because I can very easily send it in and get it back quickly. It's just nice having this confidence in a repair shop. Especially when a previous repair shop I went too charged me $60, only for the same issue to pop up.
I'd say also the pricing is pretty fair. It cost $100 to fix my New 3ds and $165 to repair my New 3ds XL. Even with fixing my New 3ds twice, that is still cheaper then buying another system online. I do want to mention though that they are cash only. That's not a problem for me, I just wait until I have the cash. But I do think that's good to know before going into a repair.
Overall I find XCUBICLE to be pretty reliable, speedy and convenient. The 3ds line is my favorite game consoles of all time, so having something so close and quality is extremely significant to me. I highly recommend anyone in the area with console repair needs...
