The Andaz Wall St is a business travelers' hotel in the financial district of Manhattan. Families and couples traveling on their own dime should know that on the list of the most popular tourist attractions, few are in this area.
If you're a tourist in the Wall Street area, the big bronze bull is a fun place to take pictures. If you're going to see the Statue of Liberty, this is the area of town where you'll catch a ferry. Otherwise, there's no reason for you to be downtown. To do the tourist thing, you'll most likely have to cab your way back and forth. You'll pay about $70 round trip to catch a Broadway play or see Times' Square.
If you're a tourist, start your hotel search over and look for properties in the mid-town area. You want to be more centrally located than the Andaz Wall Street.
If you are not a tourist and are staying downtown for business, there are a number of choices. I can compare the Andaz Wall Street and the nearby 4 Seasons on Church St. The Andez Wall Street is cheaper; you will get more bang for your buck if room size is everything to you.
The Andaz is about three years old and is looking a little frazzled. The rugs in our room, as well as some furniture, showed some gnarly stains. The couch was shot, at least on one end where many butts have sat and created a sinkhole. Sleek cabinets and book cases have veneers that are chipped and beginning to lift off in places. All three see through glass-vessel-sinks in our room were grossly stained on the underside.
Many of the original amenities offered at the Andez Wall Street are no longer even though the room rates remain high. Complimentary coffee in the morning is no more. You will need to walk to the bar area to get your fix and 2 cups will run you $7 before tip (go instead to Duane Read across the street for better coffee at a lower price).
The once heralded complementary evening wine tasting is no longer. It disappeared without fanfare or notice, as did the hotel gym. The hotel has an “arrangement” with a gym that is about a block's walk away.
Even the staff seems to have frayed a bit about the edges. Two days in a row I was promised a wake up call. Two days in a row that promise was broken. No call either day.
While most of the front desk hosts were pleasant, there were a couple that displayed distinct attitude. One in particular was the opposite of pleasant and never failed to make me feel as if I was interrupting; our mantra during our stay was “Avoid Floyd.” Oh, and avoid room service; just trust me on this one unless you relish aggravation and incompetence.
Bottom line is that for the same price, you can get a smaller, but cleaner and better maintained room at the 4 Seasons. My stay at the Andaz Wall Street was over the holidays. The financial district was dead. Perhaps the hotel is a different environment when the area is hopping with bankers. I don't know and will not find out because I won't try the...
Read moreI stay within the Hyatt family and my choices were between Hyatt Centric and the Gild for our preferred location. I went with Hyatt Centric since there didn’t seem to be 4 person rooms available at the Gild at the time I booked, and Centric had reasonable pricing. Hyatt Centric is in a great location in the Financial District. The closest subway entrance is for lines 2 and 3, which is just a few minutes walk away. It’s very easy to find. Calling Ubers wasn’t a pain.||My party arrived around 9am after a red eye and luckily, a 2-bed room was already ready. The rooms are very spacious— enough to accommodate 4 luggages without feeling too cramped. At first, it smelled like fresh paint but it went away after turning on the air. The double beds were comfortable. There were only 2 pillows per bed and they were so flat, I had to fold them to make it more comfortable. There were 2 free water bottles ready in the room. I appreciated the mini fridge, the iron/ironing board already available, the blackout curtain options and importantly, the sliding full body mirror by the closet. There were no coffees/teas. WiFi was decent. Expect to hear construction and traffic noise early in the morning— this is not the hotel’s fault, just an NYC thing so bring ear plugs if that bothers you.||The bathroom was spacious also, but it could’ve used a couple more towel hooks outside the shower (the towel rack is inside the shower, under where the toiletries go so the towels would’ve gotten wet if we left them in). It also could’ve used an extra shelf under the sink to put toiletries on. The sliding door to the bathroom doesn’t close all the way (it wasn’t broken, it seemed like it was just the way it’s built) and there was no noise control at all. I found it weird that the wall that’s shared between the bedroom and the bathroom has this translucent glass, so you can see the silhouette of someone showering. Otherwise, I appreciated the little amenities available like shower caps. ||The fitness room was located in the bottom floor. I took a quick glance at it and it seemed cleaned. There were multiple cardio machines and a separate weight room with dumbbells. On the same floor, the bathrooms for men and women required a key card to get in and they were always clean. There’s no pool at this hotel and I’m unsure about the spa services.||There were 2 restaurants called Wall and Water and Centric Bar and Grill. I didn’t get to check them out since we were mostly out and about.||I received great service from the front desk to the housekeepers during my 5 day stay here. Every time I requested for something over the phone (mending kit, more towels, etc) it would be delivered within 15 minutes.||This hotel is not for those looking for a 5-star accommodation. This is for those looking for a convenient location that’s close to many establishments. Overall, I’d stay in this hotel again for the convenient location and the...
