I called Family Jewels to make an appointment to potentially sell some gold jewelry. Richard was very friendly and polite on the phone. I showed up at the appointed time (11:30 AM on 4/11/25) with my husband. Richard continued to be very disarming and charming. He took my gold items in batches into the back room to weigh and then would come out to the front where I was sitting and tell me what he would offer for those items. I had mostly 14K gold as well as some 10K gold items and a few gold filled as well as a couple of 20K and 24K items. He separated the items into small plastic ziplock bags and wrote the price he would pay me in dollars on each bag. He never disclosed to me what gold price per ounce he was using to calculate his offers nor did he ever disclose how much my items weighed. I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable. When I told him that I also had an appointment at another establishment to value my items for comparison, his demeanor suddenly and drastically changed. He became cold and distant as if he were insulted which surprised me as we had been having a very amiable conversation until that point. He then said that all offers would be rescinded as soon as i walk out the door. I told him that I hoped he was not insulted as that was not my intention and that I thought it seemed reasonable to get more than 1 quote when selling such expensive items. He just repeated that his offer would be rescinded as soon as I walked out the door as he took a bottle of windex and proceeded to wipe away the dollar amounts he had previously written on the ziplock bags. I told him that I may be back if the other offer was less than his and again repeated that I hoped he wasn't offended. I also assured him that I knew that any future offer from him would be dependent on the market price of gold at that time which may be higher or lower than his current offer and that I was OK with that risk. He became evasive and, when asked, would not even commit to basing any future offer on the market price of gold at that time. His offers seemed arbitrary. I felt pressured and weirded out. I then went to my other appointment. My experience could not have been more different. They were very upfront and transparent. They explained to me exactly what the market price of gold was at that very moment since it changes constantly. They weighed all my items and told me exactly how much they weighed and then did all the math right in front of me. Their offer was 66% higher than what Richard at Family Jewels offered me for the exact same items. I was astounded. It was at that point that I was extremely thankful that I trusted my instincts and walked away from Family Jewels. I will warn everyone that I know about the arbitrary pricing, lack of transparency, and weird pressure tactics of Richard at Family Jewels. Avoid this place at all costs. I'm so glad that I...
Read moreFirst off, if you are selling jewelry, you have to make an appointment to meet with them. Definitely not the most convenient process, since all others in the area take walk-ins. So I make an appointment over the summer, and the day we scheduled for happened to end up being extremely hot and muggy. After showing up about 20 minutes early, we tried to enter the store to wait for the appointment. We were told upon entry that we coudn't be in the store until our actual appointment time. Apparently there was another customer in there selling things, and the staff person cited "privacy" interests. So here I am with an 11 year old in tow, the weather is oppressive, there are no other stores that we can go into and they refuse to allow us to even sit just inside the door so we can stay a bit cooler. By the way, the "store" is small and full of clutter - but there was enough space between the front door and where they met with customers to allow for a fair amount of privacy, since that seems to have been the major concern. I walked out and will never go back. For them, it doesn't seem to be about "customer service" at all. I had several thousand dollars worth of estate jewelry to sell, and another company got my business because they were actually decent people...
Read moreDo not trust this man. This "family" business made every assertion of their honesty and fairness yet tried to claim a lack of knowledge to the specific coins in the inherited collection I brought him in faith. He wouldn't call his "coin expert friend" or put me in touch with him. If he truly cared about me like he said and was actually reputable he would not have refused to let me talk to his expert. He was trying to take advantage, plain and simple. I was expected to accept $100 with his word that if the coins brought a "gentlemen's profit", his words, he would get in touch with me and give me more money. If I scrapped the silver coins alone they would be worth well over $100 but he wouldn't believe the coins were silver, not even after I showed him on silvercoinage.com. I am disabled and penniless yet he had no qualms taking advantage of me. This man has no honor. Find someone better. I will never give him any business. If you do use him, BE CAREFUL!!!!! I would give zero...
