Overall rating 2.0 - 5 minute read I was excited another used LEGO store was opening closer to me. I live in Lake St. Louis and had been driving to the Minifig Shop in Kirkwood. This one was much closer so I was excited for a closer shop. I also like supporting local businesses. If a 2nd hand LEGO store sells a new set, I'll buy from them instead of the LEGO store.
This store has lots of great sets. Both new and used. The prices for retired sets also seem close to 2nd hand market value. They weren't running any promotions when I went (other than their normal bulk buys, price of build a figs), but I don't think you're going to find any great deals here - unless maybe it's a pre-built set.
Build A Fig (2 out of 5 stars) I went to create a sig fig for myself and also search through bulk for some ordinary pieces that I used a lot in my builds. However, the selection of bodies / torsos / heads / helmets was not very good. It really felt like their were 10 to 15 bodies / torsos that were ordered in bulk and thrown into the bin. This was also true of the heads, and accessories.
Price of Build A Fig (2 out of 5 stars) I picked up 3 minifigs for $15 (that's the special) and then one more at regular price (another $5.00). At the official LEGO store, you can mix and match 3 figs for $12.99.
Bulk LEGO Big Selection (3 out of 5 stars) I searched through the used LEGO bin. At first glance, I was happy to see the LEGO sorted into plates / technic and various other pieces. However I quickly realized (much like the minifig bin) there was not a lot of selection in parts. To be fair, this could change over time as they get more bulk in (assuming they buy / sell use bulk) but I didn't even bother searching for the parts I needed because it was obvious they were not going to be there.
Bulk LEGO Bin Prices (1 out of 5 stars) After I saw the prices for the bulk buy, I would have dumped everything I found back in the bin. Huge disappointment here.
$8 (for a small cup) $14 (large tub) $25 (small bag) $50 (medium bag) $90 (large bag).
To put this in perspective, I can get any bag I want at the Minifig shop and it's purely based on weight. I am a MOC designer and I spend hours searching for pieces before purchasing from stores like Brick Link - however I can't justify my time for searching with their current selection coupled with these prices (compared to what I pay elsewhere and for a bigger selection - even factoring in the cost of gas or shipping to drive elsewhere).
I don't know if these prices are set by the store or the franchise, but I feel like they would have much better luck for bulk buys and have a lot more foot traffic if the store had better bulk prices and base it on weight.
Minifig Selections by IP (4 out of 5) Minifig Price by IP (3 out of 5) If you are looking for a particular minifig from a particular IP (star wars, lord of the rings etc .. ) they have an excellent selection. The prices for many of the figs seem competitive while others are not. Do your research and compare prices.
Selection of Official LEGO Sets (4 out of 5) If you're not a moc designer and just looking for a retired set, or even newer sets, this place has plenty of the newest releases. I saw plenty of newer Star Wars, Harry Potter and Technic sets to choose from.
Rewards Program (can't rate too early to tell) They do have a rewards program which could make a huge difference for some people (especially for repeat buyers) but like I said earlier, my first impression is that I wouldn't be making hardly any return trips in the near future.
While the Minifig shop is still my favorite place to go to, if you're in the area, make the trip because depending on what you're looking for, you might be able to save a few bucks in gas compared to driving to the actual LEGO store or to Kirkwood. However, if you've been to the Minifig shop, your expectations will be set very high, and you'll likely be disappointed by what...
Read moreThe owners are incredibly nice and they even helped me find specific pieces in the massive bins they have. I have been in this location several times and each time I have to look at the new/used items they have. I feel each time I go in there, there is something I haven't seen yet. I have been to the lego store in St. Louis and even though that store has a massive new selection I like that the Bricks & Minifigs store has a unique selection of older used legos that are reasonably priced. I have never been to the Kirkwood location but basing my experience at this business and this business alone I highly recommend supporting Bricks & Minifigs.
It can be hard to find a business that you feel very welcomed at every time you go in. The owners at this establishment are very welcoming and knowledgeable about legos. So if you are a frequent user of lego products or a newcomer I again recommend checking this...
Read moreThe owner of the store is rude and disrespectful. My family and I walked in and their dog comes up to my husband and his service dog. We tried to get their attention to get their dog from distracting my husbands service dog. Her dog wouldn’t leave his service dog alone. The owner was rude and uneducated on service dogs and didn’t care to remove her dog. She stated her dog has to be out and we should’ve told them that we have a service dog with us first. Then went back to whatever she was doing behind the counter, and after some quick back and forth the male finally got the dog behind the counter. We walked out shortly after that. All we asked was to have her dog get away from us since it was distracting a working dog, but the condescension and snarkiness from the store owner is the real issue thinking their pet can constantly smell and try to play with a...
