I wanted to tell a brief story about Jackson Street Booksellers. I believe this story is important to people who want to know about the quality of Jackson Street Booksellers.
In August 2k11, I went to Jackson Street Booksellers to sell some books on behalf of a friend. These books were mostly old, they belonged to my friend's grandfather. One book, THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS, caught the eye of the booksellers. After awhile they informed me that they could not make a "fair" offer on this book at the moment, and asked me to come back in a few days.
I immediately went home and looked up THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS. Turns out, in mint condition, the book is worth $20,000 dollars. My friend's copy was not in mint condition, but after hunting around the web I determined that my friend's copy was worth between $3,000 and $5,000.
Neither me nor my friend were aware of the book's value, and the people at Jackson Street Booksellers could've easily made a tidy profit off of our ignorance. They chose not to. This, to me, is important.
What happened to the book? Well, the folks at Jackson Street Booksellers offered to sell the book on consignment. I relayed this offer to my friend, he declined. He is holding onto THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO...
Read moreAre you looking for a bookstore that gives you the impression this could be from "The Neverending Story"? This place is for you! Ok, maybe not quite like the one in the movie...but that's what I thought when I first walked in! Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling books! My family went to a nearby store, leaving me to my own devises, and I didn't make it half-way through by the time they were ready to go! I found some first editions I didn't know I needed! When I went to check out, the person behind the counter took my money, willingly. She made sure I knew the cost of one copy. (Was it more than I'd hoped to pay, yep. Was I going to pass it up, nope!) [Note: for those who were caught off guard because nothing has prices? Check the inside cover.] I ended up being the most positive person at the counter and even bagged my own books and said thank-you. (I think there's other services like that available and believe I walked out a lot cheaper than I could have.) Will we be back? Maybe. Was this a great experience? No, not really. Will I never forget this little gem? You...
Read moreOur family was in the area for a tournament and stopped by the Jackson Street Booksellers during our downtime. With my wife and daughter both being book lovers, they found this place exciting. There is a book on every subject and a book for every age. With shelves easily up to about 8-9 feet, you can spend hours looking around. There are a few places with chairs, step stools, etc. that you can use to rest and read. The store also has some various antiques that are really interesting to look at as well. And if you have any questions, the clerk was very knowledgeable and friendly.
The only 2 negatives I found about the store is there is not very much room for people who are wheelchairs or need walkers and the store is a bit untidy. BUT IT IS A BOOKSTORE!!! From what I remember, they have been around for 30+ years and buy from the public instead of just being another distribution.
I would highly recommend a...
