Salt Mercantile — Local services in Orange Beach

This place is a racket. We rented two paddle boards for the day. We are experienced paddle boarders who know how to use and handle boards properly. The guy from the shop loaded the boards, and the one in question was larger and heavier, yet he loaded it on top of the smaller one final down. I didn't think anything of it at the time, just found it odd. Once we got to the beach the waves were pretty high, so we didn't even use the larger one. Upon the guy coming to pick them up he tried to say we damaged the board we didn't use. How can you damage something you didn't use? The guy who "helped" us told us 3 different stories about the board in question and how other people had damaged boards, lied to our faces, and then proceeded to not only charge me $100 for the supposed damage ( which I agreed to pay to just get it over with) but upon returning to our hotel we discovered another $363 charged to our credit card. When I called the owner she stated that we signed a contract that stated we should have been charged $1200 and she was "being nice" but I can tell you she was definitely not nice on the phone. She spoke to me as if I was an idiot and basically told me she was doing us a favor by only charging us the $363. She also told me that her helper guy told her my husband threw the board down fin first in front of him. That is a complete fabrication and my husband wasn't even the one carrying the yellow board! He never touched it, and I have witnesses. It blows my mind that the representative of this business would be so antagonistic towards a customer and completely fabricate events to justify fraudulent charges. Do NOT use these people....

While I will admit the apparel and accessories here are unique and gorgeous, I witnessed the dark hair associate ( I will assume, not the owner) make fun of a customer when they left and said they’d be back for a very expensive bag. She laughed and went to “check that the bag was still in the store”, suggesting the woman may have stolen it. Less than 5 minutes later, the woman returned to purchase the bag. Perhaps, the judgy associate, should be told not to judge a book by its cover. I was very close to letting the woman know what was said about her, to save her from giving them her money.
