After having a series of bad experiences at a different Kay Jewelers, my wife and I decided to try this store out to have her engagement ring and wedding band soldered (both rose gold). When we went to pick them up, the jeweler had actually soldered them together with yellow gold. I assume there is a quality assurance process somewhere along the way, but no one had caught the fact that there was a stark contrast in colors.
The manager sent it back out, putting a rush on the correction to get the rings back in time for a trip we were going on, and when it came back, it looked only slightly less yellow on the bands, and it looked no less yellow in the joint. To be fair, the lighting in the store is terrible, and you can really only see it if you are looking for it. But in literally every other place we have been, it is very apparent that the joint is yellow gold and the section of the bands down where the crease of the finger is does not match the rest of the bands It was almost like all they did was try to clean off as much of the yellow gold from the face of the bands as they could.
After seeing this in the mall lightning, we turned right back around to let them know. We were told that it is, in fact, rose gold, but since Neil Lane uses a redder rose gold than most, it isn't going to be a perfect match with the solder gold. We tried to explain that if you look at it in the lighting right outside the store, you can see that it is yellow, but she just showed us a closer view under the microscope in the store where the light glares off the joint making it impossible to see what color the joint is and assuring us that it was rose gold.
I did some Googling and found jeweler forums where they talk about the different rose gold solders and how some of the less-pure (9ct), harder ones look yellow (in fact some of the responders just stopped using it and started using yellow gold), while some of the more-pure (18ct) ones that require more heat look rose-colored.
If we were supposed to expect a non-matching color to overlay the face of the bands (and be more pronounced in the joint), we probably should have been warned ahead of time... then we could make the decision. Instead, we now have 2 rings totaling around $7,000 that are essentially ruined. I understand that the main diamond carries the bulk of that value and that it was unharmed... but the rings were beautiful as they were, and now...
Read moreUnfortunately, everything went wrong. The middle of May I took my husbandâs wedding ring in to be repaired. Mike, who was very helpful and wonderful. Sent the ring out to be sourced for the stone. Over a month later I received a phone call from a young lady who said my husbandâs ring was in. The day before Fatherâs Day and our 31st anniversary. I went to pick the ring up. I wanted to surprise my husband. When I arrived to the store, I stood for seven long minutes and was absolutely not acknowledged by anyone. One young lady was helping a customer and was about a yard away from me and did not look up, did not smile, did not acknowledge me About three minutes later another woman walked by and acknowledged me and said they would be with me shortly. Another five minutes went by, and I stood there contemplating hitting the bell For service. five minutes later, Mike walked in. Either starting his shift or from a break. He acknowledged me immediately. Thank you, Mike. I told him I was there to pick up my husbandâs wedding ring, he remembered me from over a month ago, ordering it. He proceeded to tell me that over the course of the month they were unable to source the stone and nobody contacted me to let me know that. The young lady who called me to tell me that my husbandâs ring was in, again failed to tell me that the ring was not fixed. I showed up the day before Fatherâs Day and our anniversary full of excitement expecting to pick up a surprise for my husband. but to find out that nothing was done to the ring. I cannot express how disappointed I was and I am. We have bought several pieces of jewelry from the jewelry store over the years, wedding rings, anniversary rings, bracelets, earrings. the apologies from Mike were appreciated, but certainly not enough to mend a disappointed heart. As for the other two ladies working that day, I felt totally invisible in a store that was empty with two customers. I honestly donât expect anyone to really care about this situation. It seems to be the standard of service anymore in this world. I unfortunately will not ever look to your store for future purchases. All it took was communication. So easy, but apparently, too...
Read moreWarning about Kay Promotions: Please Read My wife and I have been Kay customers for 15 years. We have made so many purchases and never had issues until recently. We were helped by Fatima at the Puyallup South hill mall store. We had made a total of $7,500 in ring purchases this time around and were told by Fatima that paying with our Kay card as always was the best route to earn points. The promotions were supposed to be interest free and full balance paid off in 12 and 18 months as we did two purchases. We have had promos like this before that worked out great.
However this time Fatima incorrectly apparently set up the monthly payments for a minimum amount instead of dividing the total amount we owed by 12 and 18 for the two promos (monthly). As a result, by the end of the promotion and because of her mistake, we ended up paying over $800 in interest. Kay said there is nothing they could do to correct this mistake. We called the bank directly and they acknowledged the problem but informed us they couldn't help either. The bank instructed us to always do the math ourselves by dividing the total amount by the number of months to ensure that we qualify for interest free promos and to call the bank earlier to check the status of our account and payments, to ensure that it is correctly set up from the outset. So anyone planning to make these monthly interest free promos a part of their financial planning for jewelry please make sure you don't let what happened to you...
