I went to get my daughter’s ring resized up and I had a bad experience with the work. The ring is custom with the same thickness the whole way around the band, no taper. They gave me a price before measuring the thickness, I guess assuming they would use the same thickness they always do. At the time, I didn’t know to mention the difference of course, since I was unaware of how the thickness was not standard. When I got the ring back and said I don’t like that the thickness tapers down where they resized it, the gentleman said I’d have to pay more for a matching thickness all around since it’s more material. At the time, I said I understood, but in hindsight, they should have looked at the ring before starting on the resizing. Once they noticed that they priced the resize wrong, they should have called me and let me know it would cost more, giving me a choice. It seems like they went into autopilot and thought it was just another resize instead of reviewing the design of the band first and doing a quick measure. They also shouldn’t have put the price back on me after making this mistake. Unfortunately, the store is over due for some renovations as the first floor smells like cigarette smoke and paint is prominently pealing from the walls. I chose to give 2 stars instead of 1 because the gentleman was very patient with me while I calmly protested and he answered all my questions. He even took a look at the stone after I told him I was nervous that there might be a crack. From that encounter, I understand why this place has 4.8 stars. I wish I had that same service with the work as well. Lastly, I chose to ignore the woman in the back who stared at me while the gentleman and I had our discussion however, I do believe the look was passive aggressive and likely...
Read moreI went all over the RVA area last summer in search of the perfect engagement ring, and after visiting 10+ locations, it was clear that Mike's shop in Carytown was the superior option. I knew absolutely NOTHING about jewelry, and Mike was able to walk me through a ton of options while also explaining everything so that it made sense to a newbie like me. In a very short amount of time, Mike had taken the old, tarnished engagement ring my grandfather had given me and re-purposed the diamond into a custom setting that's absolutely gorgeous. Everyone compliments my fiancee on her ring, and I can see the sense of pride that she has in the craftsmanship and beauty she's wearing on her finger. That's another point--he's a real craftsman and wears the apron to prove it! All of the other jewelers in town wear business suits, but not Mike! He's hands-on and actively works on your jewelry, doesn't just outsource, send it away, or have someone else do it. There's no comparison! I'm actually headed out right now to visit him on a consultation for some wedding bands. Mike never steered me wrong, he's super friendly, honest, and does awesome work. I can't recommend him highly...
Read moreI stopped by this jewler to get a simple gold clasp replaced on my bracelet. The man who changed the clasps out did it quickly, however replaced the old clasp with one that was not true gold (he claimed it was, although he did not offer me any clasp options at all) and it discolored and faded within a few weeks (obviously fake). He didnt even sauter the pieces together, just lazily bent the "gold" rings holding the clasp together. He also kept my previous gold clasp as well.
I went to Finks jewler in Charlottesville and had a fantastic experience picking out a reasonably priced true gold clasp this time, and although I had to wait a little bit for the clasp to ship in for replacement, it was well worth the wait for the quality of material and proper customer service I was...
