I was accosted in the parking lot at the HEB Plus at Blanco/1604 in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. A young Hispanic male was stopped in his car ahead of me as I walked across the parking lane. He began backing up into a parking space as I crossed and was directly behind his car. Fortunately he was at least ten feet ahead of me or he would have hit me had I not jumped back out of the way. He never stopped but continued to back into the space as he rolled down his window and yelled at me to watch where I was going. All this took place before witnesses including store personnel. I looked around for security but there was none to be found. I went straight to a store manager who was standing out in front. According to him, parking lot security didn't come on until 5 pm, it was a few minutes before 5. As I explained what just happened the young man came strutting up visibly agitated and accused me if walking down the middle of the street and getting in his way. HEB management refused to take any responsibility or assist me by calling the police. According to them, they did not own the parking lot and couldn't involve themselves with any incident which occurred there. There is a history of armed assaults at this HEB. A K-9 security guard was engaged by the store to patrol the parking lot as a result, yet management could not really provide me any assistance and indicated their security patrol was not allowed to call the police either. When I told them I didn't feel safe shopping in the store while the man was in there, they offered to have someone walk me to my car but that was the extent of their assistance. At no time did anyone ask if I was okay or had I been injured though I was visibly shaken by the incident in the parking lot and the man's words to me in the store in front of the manager. He made it very clear that he believed it was his right to back up his car into me by his threatening tone and body language. I am deeply disappointed in HEB's policy not to lend assistance to customers who have been a victim of vehicular assault in their parking lot followed by verbal assault in their store. Shoppers beware, don't believe the HEB security hype. This HEB could care less about the safety and security of...

Read moreThis H-E-B Plus is located at the very busy Loop 1604 and Blanco intersection. As a general rule, a Plus store has more floor space than the typical grocery store and offers products not found in smaller grocery stores. It's also a way to compete with Walmart-type stores which have fewer groceries but many more other products.
Happily, this H-E-B didn’t seem at all crowded on a Friday morning. I stopped in earlier in the week to purchase a greeting card and a bag of in-season low-priced fresh cherries. I made another small purchase today to take the opportunity of writing this review and take some photos.
A store this large will have around 20 cash register lines available, but this morning, it looked like only six or seven were needed. (This doesn't include cash registers used at specialty departments within the store or self-checkout lines.)
Besides longer and larger aisles and freezers for everything from butter to deodorant, there was enough space for high-quality Yeti camping equipment and coolers and a variety of outdoor grills.
To me, the only negative of this particular store was the way their gardening and live plants departments are set up. Instead of one large patio where a shopper can tell what is carried, the departments are spread all along the entire front area of the main building. So, I could not tell in a brief visit what kind of organic fertilizers are available.
A Plus store will need plenty of parking, and this location provides lots of parking without looking like an airport landing strip. There are several trees providing shade in various areas of the parking lot, and I was fortunate to find one on a 100° degree day in...
