My friends and I had an open weekend morning and two of us had passes to use up, so we decided to book a class on a Sunday at 8:30am with Halle. It was 2/3 of our first times trying out Barry's, although we had done classes similar before (i.e. OT)
PARKING - There's 2-hour spots right in front of the entrance, and additional parking in the nearby lot and streets.
SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Since it was two of our first times there, we went in blindly and followed our friend's instructions and general advice. I think otherwise we would have gone to the front desk and expressed it was our first visits and hopefully they would have guided us. There's merch available to buy and lockers in the lobby area. They have a Men's and Women's locker room, where additional lockers can be found. The Women's locker room seemed to still have some construction going on, so the walls didn't look the absolute best. There's showers available but the space overall is quite narrow in my opinion, which would make it hard to change. Before you go in, there's a shelf with towels available for you.
WORKOUT - RUN X LIFT Total Body - Halle L. (50 min) I'm glad there was a full-body workout available on the weekend as a sort of entry workout for us to try. When you sign-up online, you pick whether you start on the Treadmills or Floor. The number assigned to your Treadmill/Floor is the same number when you rotate in between the rounds. Once you walk into the room, you get started immediately. Halle, our trainer for this class, starts yelling out instructions to both the Treads/Floor members, and at first there was a lot going on to process. This was my first instructed class in a long time, and for it to be so fast-paced took a bit getting used to while still figuring out the room layout and equipment. I'm familiar with strength exercises and that made it a lot easier for me to get into the groove of things, but my friend isn't as well-versed and she said it was difficult to follow along.
The workout itself was demanding, but I definitely could have pushed myself more. Halle gives 3 levels each round, whether it's 3 different running speeds or 3 different weight amounts, you choose what works for you. Some people go above the stated levels, others go lower - I noticed you do get praised for going above and beyond but still encouraged throughout if you need to slow down.
OVERALL - I would recommend Barry's to Intermediate/Advanced fitness goers as it's much more fast-paced than other workout classes. You should have a good general knowledge of weight exercises and should be somewhat capable of 2 rounds of intense Treadmill runs. I enjoyed my experience and would definitely try another Barry's class, but my other friend says she would prefer...
Read moreIf you're looking for a workout to get some cardio and weight lifting in before or after your work day, check out Barry's San Diego. The staff is always friendly and nice, and the cleaning crew does a phenomenal job keeping the place in tip top shape.
When class starts, it's a pretty straight forward bootcamp vibe - think HIIT workouts and good music with an awesome coach. Most folks show up a few minutes before class to check-in at the front desk before you're welcomed into the Red Room.
I recently took a class by Stephen, and let's just say, he was an incredible instructor. I was reluctant to take a 6:20PM class, especially after a long work day, but Stephen showed up - delivered - and set the bar for what every San Diego Barry's class should feel like. He was engaged, personable and really connected with the class, which doesn't happen with all instructors. You can tell he really cares about his craft, and it showed. My friend agreed.
On your way out, or between switching stations, don't forget to give your neighbors a fist bump for making it to class! Barry's isn't an easy workout.
Pro-tip #1: Try to get a spot away from the speakers, or else your ear drums will be suffering.
Pro-tip #2: Try to get a spot away directly in front of the fans, lol - trust me, your future self, after the first or second round, will thank you.
Pro-tip #3: Bring some water - seriously. You're going to need it.
Pro-tip #4: If this is your first time at Barry's, please do not push yourself. The coach's suggestions on speed, weight and rep are just that - suggestions. Be kind to your body and push yourself at your own...

Los Angeles classes are for sissy’s in comparison to this San Diego class. The gym itself was SUPER clean and had more to offer than the LA location. I found my self using the shower in this location and again it was super clean. I was impressed as well by the staff who were all super helpful, conversational, humble and sweet as opposed to the employees at the Los Angeles West Hollywood location. WOULD...
