Named after a well-known Chinatown activist who is rather influential and controversial; she died in 2016 before the Central Subway was completed and opened in January 2023. However, Rose Pak had a passion and heart for people from her tribe and the planning for Central Subway began in the late 1980s to provide more transit options to Chinatown, which is infamous for crowded bus riders who are often seniors yet isolated from reaching LRV or BART. The construction of 1.7 miles T Line with only four new stations in SoMa, Union Square and Chinatown cost nearly $2 billion dollars!!! I remembered the project started in 2013 and had seen giant tunnel boring machines on the blocks on 4th St. btw Harrison and Bryant street excavating tunnels. When in months of rainy season the streets were in such a mess; and I heard of many problems caused the delay during excavating tunnels due to the terrain beneath SF. In any event, it’s a clean station equipped with elevators and escalator but stairs are pretty steep or challenging, about 10 flights to enter or exit from Union Square station and about 8 flights from Chinatown (20 steps each block for a total of 8 or 10 blocks) as I have climbed many times. T landed perfectly in the heart of Chinatown on Stockton St. near the corner of Washington St. Enjoy your ride on the T...
Read moreChinatown - Rose Pak is one of the nicest Muni stations in my opinion. It is clean and very modern, and makes access to the heart of Chinatown easy. The art fixtures and historic photos on the walls are also very nice. The station has many bus connections, directly connecting to the Muni 8, 8AX, 8BX, 30, 45, and 91 lines. Occasionally, the elevator may be out of order. The trip up the stairs/escalators from the station to street level can be exhausting, but for most it should not be too much of a problem. There used to be water leakage into the station, but that should have been fixed after the temporary closure of the central subway in late February and early March. My main reason for loving this station is its proximity to Washington Street, a street where many of my favorite businesses and locations are spread about. Overall, a fine...
Read moreEven if you have to switch from the Powell station (the walk is short and underground, so no problem on rainny days) this is a very convenient way to reach Chinatown. I didn't ride during peak hours, so I got plenty of room and easy commuting. There are electric stairs and elevator, but climbing the stairs is a...
