I’m writing this review early into my 6-week Barbell Basics package—just two 6:30 AM classes in so far—but I already feel like I’ve found something meaningful.
The classes are well-structured and strike a great balance: there’s a clear group focus with supportive energy, but also room for individual attention and pacing. It’s challenging, but not intimidating—enough to push you without making you want to flee. After each session, I feel physically good, and I’ve noticed the days I attend class tend to be better days at work. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
I’ve already met a few people I really like and hope to connect with more over the coming weeks. The 6-week package itself is a smart model—I much prefer it over a “free trial week.” In my opinion, paying helps you show up with purpose and commitment.
And yes, I’ve already had that post-workout cooldown high where I think: Maybe I could train for a weightlifting competition someday? A delightful delusion, but honestly—it’s fun to daydream when your body feels strong.
I’m not yet sure if I’ll be able to continue after the 6 weeks—it’s definitely a premium gym, and with that comes a bit of a financial stretch for someone like me, who’s here thanks to a fitness stipend from my employer. I may have to return to my free apartment workouts once the 6 weeks wrap up. (Perhaps I should start a GoFundMe—haha!) But I LOVE having access to the full range of equipment at The Yard, and the space itself is motivating in a way that’s impossible for me to replicate at home.
In short: If you’re considering trying The Yard, the 6-week package has been a great way (imho) to test the waters with intention. I’ve had a great start, and I’m glad I signed up. Looking forward to more...
Read moreHaving recently joined The Yard after being with a nearby commercial gym (that isn't even open 24 hours), I am very happy with my experience here. I could probably give you 24 reasons to sign up at The Yard though - but I'm going to cap it at half that number.
1.All I have to do is reserve my pod - usually for the next day - and I am guaranteed clean equipment that works. 2.I don't have to walk around the gym to find a plate or a barbell. 3. I can walk away from the bench and no one is going to take it while I'm looking for a weight plate. 4. Everything is in its place. 5. There are towels. 6. Bathrooms are clean. 7. Occasionally, I need someone to spot, and they are happy to do that for me. 7. Coaches offer pointers even when they are not "your" coach. 8. It's got all the equipment you could hope for. 9. Staff is responsive and friendly. 10. When a coach noticed I was videoing for my coach, he offered me his tripod, and showed me where to find it. 11. When they knew I was interested in powerlifting, they added me to their text list - and what a great group. 12. I'm going with a group from the gym to a...
Read moreThis is the nicest gym I have been to in San Francisco. Whether you are here for a day or live here full time - this gym should be sought out by all. The owner meets you at the door and gives you a private tour. Every work out station is spaced apart making it Covid friendly. Additionally, limited capacity means that you never wait for a machine. That in itself is worth the price of admission. Last but not least - the gym is impeccably clean, having personally seen the owner scrubbing down the entire facility every night. I can't recommend this facility enough for personal trainers, avid gym goers or those looking for a friendly environment to begin your fitness journey. While most gyms overflow with BROS - this is very friendly for all and is becoming my favorite place to spend...
