We did a couple of food tours while on vacation. It's one of the best ways to learn the history and culture of the area. Spoon tours was recommend by the hotel we were to stay at the next week. We met at Plaza de Armas for our sunset tour where we found Danielle, a very darling local with a degree in food science. She shared her knowledge of the area and took as to delicious places. We do food tours in Napa, so we got on very well. She is new to the business and very passionate about Old San Juan. I have to say we texted her quite a bit after the tour for recommendations, and she promptly answered. Thank you! That made our trip so much better. We started at a little coffee shop for a local cocktail, on the tour there were a few cocktails! I actually went back to the coffee shop the next morning for an empanada and coffee. We next had mofongo at a restaurant on the corner of Calle San Francisco and Calle San Justo- I can't remember the name- but it was the best mofongo we had while in San Juan- and we went back there for dinner before we left for home. I let Oscar knew how we knew about the restaurant and he was so happy that we came back! One of the highlights was the Cortes Chocolate Bar. OMG_ that chocolate martini was so good! We also went back there and spent about $300 on Martini's and chocolate to take home. And of course, you have to have rice, beans and pork! We stopped at another corner cafe that happened to be a block from where we were staying. I wish I could remember the names of the places we visited- but I do remember where they were! Old San Juan is so charming. I loved staying there and being able to get up in the morning to explore the slag cobblestones. A delicious fish kabob and sausage slider, another cocktail and finished with a Popsicle. Later that night we went to a bar that Danielle told us was #39 of the 50 best bars in the world. So of course we went there and I had one of their unusual drinks. The next morning as I was walking around bumped into my mixologist Vinnie. That was fun too and another connection I would not have made without Danielle. The people in Puerto Rico have been through a lot. But you would never know it by their attitudes. They are some of the nicest people I have ever had the...
Read moreLast night I had an awesome Spoon Experience Sip and Savor Cocktail tour around Old San Juan Puerto Rico. Our tour guide Rosario "Ro" was extremely knowledgeable, fun, upbeat and guided our group to 4 awesome bar stops throughout the streets of old San Juan, each experience was different than the next. First stop was the Decanter Hotel rooftop bar where we sampled a fresh new (incredibly fabulous) drink in a hipster, cool, and airy-vibe local. The hotel itself is beautiful and in the center of everything! At bar stop 2 of 4, we learned a lot about Puerto Rican rum and Hemingway's favorite drink of choice. At the 3rd bar stop (La Taberna Lupulo, we had a delicious craft beer with Don Q passion fruit and B.O.B. (Puerto Rico's own Born on the Beach blood orange blonde Ocean Lab Brewing Co.) I'll be looking for this back home in the states. This bar is eclectic with great wall entertainment. I cannot forget the delicious Puerto Rican/Cuban small bite sandwich (slow roasted pork shoulder, cheese, and a pickle on toasted bread) served with the craft beer. The 4th and final bar stop was La Crema inside Aqui Se Puede. Here, the bartender crafted a spicy rum drink and the chef presented empanadas with beet powder.....deliciouso! Needless to say the tour ended here, but our night lingered at La Crema with a few more drinks and appetizers as we enjoyed the vibe, music and atmosphere! Overall the entire Spoon Experience was phenomenal and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great evening in old San Juan while also learning a little bit of history and meeting new friends along the way!...
Read moreMy husband and I did the Sunset Walk & Taste Tour. We chose Spoon since they offered 2 cocktails, a small group size, and a lower price. They were incredibly responsive when we had a question, which we greatly appreciated. Our guide, Elliott, was fabulous. He was knowledgeable and did a great job of leading our group of 12 through the busy streets of Old Town. The tour included a decent amount of history, which I enjoyed.
Our first stop was in a fancy hotel. We had watermelon mojitos and ceviche. Naturally, I enjoyed my mojito since it’s one of my favorite drinks. I was surprised how much I liked the ceviche since I usually don’t like raw fish.
Our second stop was a causal restaurant where my husband and I had actually eaten at a few days earlier. We weren’t disappointed since we enjoyed the restaurant so much the first time around. We had croquettes and frozen hot chocolate, which were just as yummy as we remembered.
Our third stop was a bar on Calle de San Sebastián. We tried beer-mimosas that paired well with our cubanos. The cubano was my favorite dish of the night!
Our fourth stop was an intimate restaurant in a historical landmark. We tried a variation of mofongo and had coffee flan for dessert. Both were cooked well, but were not my taste
This tour is a good value with quality food that won’t leave you hungry. I’d recommend going on one of the first days you visit in order to orient yourself to Old...
