This is my local Bashas, and now that I have shopped here dozens of times, I feel I can make an honest and fair assessment of the store.
Regarding the store in general, their self checkout isn't great, and prices are generally expensive. When I first moved to the area, I made a spreadsheet on my phone, and went to all the different stores in the area to compare prices. Bashas was competitively priced on some things, and more expensive on others. I compared prices to Safeway, Walmart grocery, Costco, Sprouts, Amazon, and Fry's.
One quick example: Fleischmann's yeast at Bashas was $7.99 or so...the same product at Walmart was $5.48. That's nearly 50% more expensive. I understand Bashas is a smaller local grocery chain, but that much markup is too much.
Produce is decent quality at Bashas, better than Walmart, but I think Safeway and Fry's are better for produce quality. Several times, I was intending to get a certain vegetable, like tomatoes or carrots, and walked away empty-handed because Bashas' quality disappointed. Their bell peppers are usually very small, and they charge per each, rather than by weight. Not cool. In comparison, Safeway's peppers are usually huge and fresh!
Compared to competitor stores, butter is well priced, as is honey, but milk and eggs are expensive. Canned goods and pantry items are around 10% to 20% more on average.
That being said, I still shop at Bashas. But pay attention to this: it is very selective shopping for what is deeply discounted. Get the thank you rewards card linked to your phone number. Pay attention to the sales (you can view online or use their app), and make sure you "activate" the coupons you want to apply. With using the digital coupons, I've found that Bashas can have good prices on meat and produce. Recently, I got some amazing brisket for $4.49 per pound and they sometimes have chicken thighs and drumsticks for $0.99 per pound. Sometimes ground beef is under $3 per pound, which is a great price around here, so I typically get a couple packages when it's on sale, then pull from my freezer when it's not on sale.
One more great thing about Bashas. Their website/app is only so-so. Compared to Safeway, which can search all products in their store, the search in Bashas' app only searches the items on sale, and even then the search is extremely picky and I often can't find things. For example, searching "green beans" might not find the item because the exact wording in the app is "green bean". Annoying to say the least. Also, there is no ability to "zoom in" and make the tiny print on their weekly ads larger. Also annoying. On the other hand, the personalized coupons are great. I activate them all and then forget about them. Sometimes you get a nice bonus like, "oh yeah, I forgot about that 20% off meat department coupon I activated. Now my massive hunk of brisket that was already on sale is an extra 20% off. Nice!!"
TLDR summary: Don't do your general shopping at Bashas. Make quick stops here weekly for the deeply discounted items, and make sure to activate the coupons...
Read moreI was in the store yesterday around 7:15pm and had one of the worst experiences I’ve had in a store. I was heading to check out there was 1 register open, but since I had 3 separate orders I opted to just go to the self checkout instead. The cashier proceeds to walk off to go do something else so I said, “I can just check myself out if she doesn’t want to check me out.” I don’t think this was necessarily the cashier’s intentions as my daughter told me she had in headphones so that might have been the reason for the mix up. As I walk toward the self checkout Deanna is basically trying to force me to go to a register instead of checking myself out. She kept making smart comments such as “I don’t allow big orders to go through self checkout” , etc. mind you I had maybe 20 items or so. She sat there across from me at a different self checkout and watched me the whole time I had to void an item off because I scanned it one too many times and she was right there to do that because she had been watching me the whole 2-3 transactions. I felt so awkward and truthfully if I hadn’t been shopping for other people I would’ve left and not spent a dime in such establishment. The only thing I can think of is that she was racially profiling me because I hadn’t been in that store for some time and we hadn’t had any other interactions prior to this one. I will be also contacting corporate Monday as this type of behavior is unacceptable and should not be tolerated nor she Deanna be allowed to represent the company if this is the type of nasty behavior she’s going to be exhibiting. My daughter was with me and sadly had to witness this mistreatment as well. My black and brown people beware that’s...
Read moreThe cashier and employee Sandra H is one of the most rudest lady I've come across. I go to this Bashas' regular since I live so close and everytime she feels the need to Nick pick my item to make sure they are full price or that I'm not stealing organic fruit/vegetable and putting in the price as non-organic. Today I selected the 75 cent bell peppers. I grab red, golden and orange bell pepper that were right next to each other, due to a workers mistake they had put all organic golden bell pepper in the adversited .75 cent area with the others. Upon going to the cash register Sandra H rudely accused me of "sneaky" a golden bell pepper in the bag of non-organic. LIKE REALLY!?! I'm tired of her chastising and bullying me over groceries. I had a manager take a look at the clearly adversited bell pepper price and that they were all the same golden bell peppers. All he had to say " look like someone put them there by mistake" worst customer...
