Incompetent Operative and Post-Operative Care
While the staff at Crossroads veterinary clinic is generally friendly and basic care is adequate the poor surgical approach they exercised when handling my dog during his neuter and nasal resection was unnacceptable to me.
It is my opinion as a healthcare researcher of over 10 years, and based on the independant opinions of two other highly trained and experienced veterinarians, that my dog's scrotal sutures were significantly overtightend and spaced too far apart leading to a buckling of the suture line. Further, in both the nose and scrotal incision, the staff at Crossroads used a bioabsorbable suture for a transcutaneous stitch which while acceptable in the short term, by their own admission is not acceptable for long term (3 weeks) implantation.
After two weeks, and the time for suture removal, the swelling in my dogs nose had become so severe that he would have bouts of air gulping in the AM. They refused to remove the sutures from his nose siting an inability to perform a conscious sedation which is false. Additionally, they backt-racked with excuse after excuse contradicting their earlier claims as to why it was OK to use the absorbable suture when it was clearly causing issue. When told of the obstructed nares in the morning and how the breathing was compromized during certain times of the day the response was dismissive stating that, "I have a hard time believing that." It is my opinion that belief does not factor into a factual conversation about animal wellfare or the appropriate use of medical supplies.
When confronted with the poor and non-standard care they had provided, the half baked excuses did not hold up to scrutiny and they were unwilling to admit an error in judgement or practice or to resolve the issue they had caused.
To avoid belaboring many additional points I will summarize by stating that the ability and willingnesss to resolve the problem was completely unsatisfactory.
As someone with a body of work experience in human and animal surgical models, and as someone who had the presence of mind to consult other veterinarians before forming my opinion, I strongly advise anyone requiring operative care for their animal to avoid this location as their surgical protocols result in substandard...

This is one of those outstanding places that you sort of don't want to tell anyone else about because you want to keep it all to (and for) yourself. However, they deserve every bit of the little that I can do for them due to how much they have already done for me and one of my fur-children.
I am so grateful for CROSSROADS VETERINARY in every way. From the very first phone contact with them I knew I had been referred a very special place.
On my first visit to the building I could tell from the number of other happy-to-wait in the parking area (yep, it's the new normal) clients that I am not the only subscriber to this belief.
Despite the number of people (and pets!) waiting to be called to the front door, the check-in process was very orderly, thorough, and caring... and proceeded quickly. I left knowing that my beloved pet would be well cared for until I returned.
The phone call from the attending veterinarian, (Dr. Utsey in my case) was very detailed and addressed all my concerns in a compassionate and pragmatic way. Options for treatments were clearly explained and prices were immediately given. When one particular treatment option had various price potentials, a follow up call from one of the staff members was made to me a short time later.
Long story shorter than it could be...my little furball will not be with me for much longer but he will be able to remain comfortable and cared for until he tells me it's his time to journey on. Until that day this will remain his place for check-ups and medications.
And after his time with the wonderful team at Crossroads is done, I will always be bringing the other members of my fur family here. This is truly an outstanding practice and I thank them from the bottom...
Read moreOver my pet career & personal pets too met hundreds of medical pet pros, and learned to discern greatness. Searched for years to find this good a veterinary provider office, been a devoted client ever since for years now.
They handle complex cases brilliantly. Autoimmune, neuro fundamentals, parasites, behavior, genetic. Elderly pet stuff lately too.
They collaborate too, my dog has a whole pavlovian system and their pet handling Kung Fu is STRONG. The system he's trained for only works if the staff play along with his 'games'. They've made sure he's NEVER drooled from stress, paced like a zoo animal, whined from fear, cowered, or even panted, just because they make the effort for his games. They've kept his behavior meds on point for years, and thanks to that he thrives and has had an incredible, adventure filled love of life, made friends everywhere and thrived.
They advocate for pet's stress and pain just as much as all the other other health needs. Even doing the one thing my dog finds hard to deal with, they make it manageable for him with astonishing versatility.
They also wade the difficult comfort care talks brilliantly, give options, offer clear communication and expectations, have a good range of in house laboratory and tech too.
Plus they are so kind, they're so good with humans as well.
Our dog is so darn lucky that the when the most medically complicated pet happened, we found the best vet staff I've ever had the pleasure of working with too. Every time we visit they impress.
Thank you for making every aspect of his life to be poised to live his healthiest. You helped him have such a long...
