I thought it was impossible for a fast food/drive through place to serve a decent vegan burger. It's actually beyond me as to how they could do it. I mean I'd tried them from other places. And you either got hassled for ordering a vegan burger or you got the wrong thing. Or you got a patty wrapped in a wrapper since the bun wasn't vegan. I've seen it all. I had super low expectations for Super Deluxe. I mean LOW. So when Yelp Elite said hey y'all who wants to try it I said okay. Let's do this.
Let me start by saying: people are excited. It's a new spot. Lines are LONG. But complaining about the wait at a new spot is the one thing a restaurant can't control when they have so many people show up. Once you actually get up to order in the drive through it's pretty fast. Another tip: guys, view the website FIRST so you have your order ready to go! As a vegan, my options were the Vegan Deluxe Burger.
Now let me insert my complaints here: I hate when you get a burger soaked in sauces that you then try to eat and it's basically just mush. I also hate when there are so many veggies that it turns your bun to mush as the bun is a floppy piece of bread that seems like an afterthought.
The good news: the bread is not a loser here. Oh no. It's a Portland Pub bun. Sturdy. Flavorful and y'all, it can hold toppings AND veggies without falling apart. So the bun is a win. I also really like that they wrap it up so you can hold it and eat not just like a regular burger from a drive through where you end up driving and having the veggies fall onto your lap. So no complaints on that front!
The lowdown on the burger: it's really good. Now I'm admittedly not a fan of 99.9% of the vegan "meats" on the market and one brand actually makes me feel pretty awful when I eat them. I couldn't figure out what brand this could be but it was flavorful, held its shape when I tore into it and it didn't have any unpleasant side affects after I ate it. It had a black bean salsa (?) on it which was really good. I don't know if that's what it was, it was black and creamy with onion in it. And it was slightly sweet (like a caramelized onion,) but it was delicious. There was also something like a thousand island sauce on it? Also totally questioning it but using my tastebuds lol. I love that I could get vegan cheddar cheese and that it was melted. The taste and texture were excellent. My thoughts on it: it's pricey, but as a vegan I would rather pay for a burger I really like, and know exactly what I'm getting, than be disappointed. I would say for a drive through "fast food" experience, the burger is tops.
Again, with the fries, I expected disappointment. I don't like heavy, greasy fries. I don't like thick or floppy fries. I know I am PICKY!!! I saw the "crinkle" fries and automatically registered disappointment. But again Super Deluxe got me. They were crispy, salted just right and not greasy AT ALL. They say they only use Canola oil on their website and I honestly don't know enough about the oils to mark that as the difference, but I can tell you I know when I'm craving a burger and fries where I'll be next.
The staff was friendly and did a great job with the chaos of many many many cars in the drive through and the food was great. I only give it 4 stars because I've got to go back again a few times to solidify it as 5. My favorite burgers still reside in Portland and Los Angeles so it's a hard title to capture but Super Deluxe you...
Read moreMy wife wanted to try this place. She had heard good reviews and believed it was mimicking In N Out's style and appearance. With a decades long history with the soon-to-come-Portland In N Out, we gave them a shot. I thought the order was simple enough - 3 Super Deluxe burgers, one plain (meat and bun only), one with no tomato or onions, and the last with everything, and 3 French fries to go.
After 50 years of ordering something plain, I checked before we pulled away. I was glad since I could all 3 burgers and all were smother in cheese and other stuff - quite odd since the read back at ordering was perfect. I got the manager's attention who rushed to get a replacement plain burger to us as my daughter inspected the others; all seemed correct.
As we headed home we sampled the fries. We had to make sure we were eating the fried potatoes and not the cardboard drink carrier. Once home we discovered the 2 "plain" burgers (the original that was not plain and their replacement) were browned on the outside but raw in the middle and half the fries may have brush the deep fryer for a quick dip; clearly much could have been cooked longer. Rather than enjoy an early dinner I found myself re-cooking (or in some cases, cooking for the first time) our Super Deluxe.
We were so disappointed that we drove to Keizer the next day for an In N Out meal. As for Super Deluxe, they best clean up their act because the competition is going to be rough. I may return, but it will...
Read moreI first come here to apologize. I had Super Deluxe a few years back and was not impressed. I was trying to compare it too much to In-N-Out. However, they are two different ballparks.
Since coming back to Super Deluxe, specifically this location, I can confidently say this is one of the best, and reasonably priced burgers, in all of the PNW.
This place doesn't miss. The burgers are always extremely filling and delicious. I never thought a burger could be so packed and they never mess up my order. Knock on wood, but the food is always perfect. The amount of fries they give you is fantastic as well. One order of fries can easily be split between two people.
Since this is the only Super Deluxe we eat at, I can only speak on the service of this location, but the service is always extremely friendly. I almost feel at home every time they warmly greet me at the drive thru speaker.
Do you have to wait a little longer for your food compared to other fast food places? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. The service and quality of the food make it all pay off.
Overall, don't be a fool like me and avoid coming to this burger joint. I regret all those wasted days thinking this place wasn't worth eating at. Instead, choose to come here next time you're craving a burger, or chicken sammy, or just feel like burning some cash. There are so many small things they do that make me a loyal Super Deluxe enthusiast.
I can't wait to...
