I didn't think I needed a laptop; I have an iPhone, and a desktop. And then my Solar System started to act up due to software issues, which requires access directly into the software's inner workings. I suppose I could have set up my six year old desktop out there, and I might have been able to debug the software, but...that's a lot of stuff and cables! So the hunt was on for a laptop that can be used in a hot and dirty environment, potentially in inclement weather. Oh, and it's got to be affordable. And I had to re-learn computer-speak, because they've advanced quite a bit since I had my last laptop. It didn't take long, and I found what I was looking for: a Panasonic Toughbook. Used one during my deployments to Iraq; they weren't the fastest, lightest, or newest, but they were always able to help me accomplish my assigned missions. And they're still available, pretty much the same as what I used back then, so there wouldn't be a learning curve trying to learn how to use a new piece of equipment. Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff doesn't sell "new" computers, but refurbished computers. They have some hours of use on them, but everything that doesn't perform to factory standards gets replaced prior to the sale...which made it the perfect tool to get my $60k solar system back online and producing power. My CF-31 arrived a couple of days ahead of schedule, and it was almost like putting on a comfortable old sneaker. Everything works, everything is as I remember, and now even faster, thanks to the absence of Government mandated spyware/software to ensure you don't do something illegal, immoral, or treasonous. I was able to get my system back to Full Operational Capacity in less than two hours; the money I saved by not having a technician fix my system more than paid for the laptop! My laptop came with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed, and it runs perfectly, even though some of the hardware security features of the laptop (TPM 2.0) are not retro-fittable on a computer this old. As long as I access the internet through a properly configured firewall, with appropriate Windows Defender/Security features activated, and avoid unnecessary software (especially free-ware!), I'm reasonably safe. Considering the price of a refurbished CF-31 vs. the price of a new FZ-40 (the replacement for the CF-31), I got a heck of a good deal. It'll do everything I need it to do, and more! It's good to have a computer as reliable as the CF-31, even though it doesn't have the latest, greatest features; I don't plan on playing the latest video games on it, anyway. It's good enough for what I need it to do, and the...
Read moreI purchased a brand spank'n new Lenovo Flex 14 laptop. Right around the time it is four and one half months old, I start having problems with the shift key. I have to keep poking it until it finally works. Later, the entire number's row of keys stops working. I can't type a number. Understand that this never left the house. Not been carried around, bumped or dropped. I called n=both where I got it and Lenovo. They wanted me to ship it to them, they would look at it, let me know how much it was going to cost to fix it, in about 6 weeks. FORGET any warranty. I had several private documents that were work in progress and couldn't wait that long AND, were "private". I accepted that Lenovo was a piece of over priced garbage and I lost my money and the claimed warranty didn't exist. I started searching for "heavier duty" lap tops that have clear track record of being reliable and durable. My search's kept leading me to the "Toughbook" and then I found Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff. I called and spoke to Bob and explained my issues and what I was looking for and why in a laptop. We had a good and very helpful conversation and he helped me to chose the used Toughbook that I purchased with the options that it has. He pointed out, which I really like, is that these are designed and built to easily replace or upgrade key components. I received it, got it set up, had some questions, called and got very good answer's and I have been using it since which going on about 6 weeks now. I am liking this puppy A LOT. It is everything that it is designed to be and do and I have no doubt that Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff will be there if I have any issue or questions. They are great people to work with. I have already recommended them to a few people and shall continue to do so. The price was more than reasonable. I give them a rating of 30. Ten for Bob, ten for his service, ten for the gal who did such a great job of following up so well and getting me the additional optional parts and accessories that I ordered. ALL great people rolled in to one very good...
Read moreI work in aviation, and my company was looking for an inexpensive but sturdy laptop to run some of our maintenance software on. After reading a good number of positive reviews, we decided to purchase one of the cheaper i3-based Toughbooks from Bob Johnson.
As I told Bob in the email I sent after receiving the computer... their definition of "scratch and dent" is delightfully loose. This machine looks like it was maybe lightly used for a brief period of time and then put away in someone's desk drawer. It's in excellent shape, much better than I would have ever expected for how little it cost.
We also needed a 32-bit copy of Windows for compatibility with some of our older software, and even though this machine didn't have that listed as an option, our request was accommodated with no trouble. That fact alone was worth the price of admission.
Hopefully we won't break this little guy anytime soon, but if we do, we're going to go right back to Bob Johnson for a replacement. I don't think there's any better place that we could spend the money....
