I shopped other jewelry stores in the area and Southern Charm was my last stop (it was recommended by another jeweler). I was looking for something VERY specific for our recently widowed sister. Losing our healthy brother-in-law was a blow to this family. We have lost our parents, but that wasn't a shock as they were in their late 80s/early 90s. This however has been incredibly surreal. There are six siblings and we don't normally give each other birthday presents, because, well, we just don't. This year was different for our sister. We wanted her to know that we had her back. We wanted to give her something special.
Anyway, nothing was tripping my trigger and the woman assisting me (I CAN NOT recall her name) was extremely helpful, but not pushy. As I was getting ready to call it quits, she came up with a great idea for a necklace based on what our situation was. A compass charm on a necklace. Again, not what I was thinking, but after pondering on it for a bit and calling one of my siblings, this idea turned out to be absolutely perfect! Along with the gift, I created a card that stated "We have always been together to navigate through life. Look for us in the North, South, East and West. We will be there for you. Wear us close to your heart like we hold you to ours." We are spread out throughout this entire globe, but what we proved since February is that we are there for one another. Always. Forever.
Thanks again...
Read moreI visited this shop a few months ago looking for an engagement ring for my then fiancĂ©. Be it that there arenât many jewelers in Southport, I had hoped that Southern Charm could accommodate me. I was so terribly wrong about this, upon entry I was met with discontent and eyes full of spite- you could see the reflection of the staffâs disposition towards me. Being a person of color Iâm used to this type of thing, but there was something about this stare I couldnât shake. As I made my way through the underwhelming selection, I finally found a piece I was interested in. I motioned and politely asked for help but was ignored until a lady named Michelle came and helped. She approached me and met my eyes with a half smile. We browsed through a few rings of my interest and my top pick I presented last- as soon as I asked about it she began laughing. She said to me, still jovial, âYeah honey, thatâs gonna be way out of your price range.â and followed with another laugh. This hurt as she knew nothing about my financial situation ( I could have afforded that and many more, especially of their cheap metalwork they disguise as âjewelryâ) but jumped to make an assumption based off of what could only be her prejudiced and skewed world view. Needless to say I gathered my pride and left. They say go where youâre appreciated, let me tell you that at Southern Charm jewelers, people of color are not...
Read moreMy mother and myself stopped here on a rainy day during our vacation to get permanent jewelry. Everyone in the shop welcomed us with open arms and helped us pick out exactly what we wanted - my mom got a bracelet and myself an anklet. We both got white gold paperclip chains, and Michelle helped us pick between materials based on our lifestyle. Michelle, Chicky, Heather, and Michael were phenomenal and extremely pleasant company. A few days later, I noticed my anklet was a little tighter than I wanted, so I gave them a call to see if we could come back in for a readjustment. Michael originally couldnât come into the shop to adjust for us until later, so we cancelled and thanked them anyway. To our surprise, 30 minutes later, they called us and said come on in and adjusted my anklet free of charge! I cannot say enough how friendly and helpful everyone in the shop is. Please give them your business - their jewelry selection...
