(Disclaimer: My review is primarily based on my experiences as a Yu-Gi-Oh player at the time of writing.)
Overview 1st Capital Gaming is one of the best locals that I have ever attended in the many years I have spent playing Yu-Gi-Oh. Both the price of sealed product and singles are an excellent bargain and they almost always have the most recent product in stock to boot. Shop itself is clean, simple, spacious, and comfortable. The atmosphere is inviting; boasting a community and staff that are welcoming, chill, and supportive. Tournaments run smoothly and prizing is decently generous. All in all, 1st Capital Gaming is my 1st pick for locals and I will definitely be back to revisit whenever I am in the area (also has the best chairs I've ever seen in a locals). Five Stars.
Selection/Pricing For sealed product, the shop usually carries the most recently released sets and structures for (defacto) the best listed prices I've ever seen. Definitely worth picking up a few boxes or packs because you're probably not going to get better anywhere else. The selection of singles was present, but mostly relegated to a few half-full binders; prices were fair at least. Bulk boxes are available to sift through for those that are willing and interested.
Shop/Area Playing area is very nice: The tables are clean; the chairs exceptionally comfortable; and there is more than enough ample space for players. A hand sanitizer station is present which is also very appreciated. Snacks and drinks are available to purchase next to the counter and there is more food nearby if hungry. Parking is no hassle due to its location.
Community/Staff Every person that I interacted with was amicable and helpful both during in game and outside. People were usually down to trade at fair values and everyone was honest when buying or selling. People don't mind teaching new players how to play the game and would give away cards to assist them in building their decks. A very easy-going and warm atmosphere for sure.
Tournament/Meta At the time of writing, weekly locals are held on Thursdays and Saturdays. Entry fee is $10 which will net you two packs. Generally 8-16 players attend with a meta that is a low-to-moderate power level (there are a few individuals playing tier 1/2 strategies, some on rogue tier, and the rest were on pet deck/basic structures). Tournaments proceeded smoothly, with a knowledgeable judge nearby to help facilitate ruling questions and decisions. Time was not strict (as long as both players agreed to play the match out). There are easy to view TVs that display timers, round pairings, and final standings.
Final Notes It would be nice if the store itself opened a few boxes so that more up to date singles were available. There wasn't really a display case for Yu-Gi-Oh (mostly magic) which would be nice to have. More sleeves colors and other Yu-Gi-Oh accessories would be welcome. I'm honestly nitpicking here, but there was literally nothing...
Read moreLet me start by saying before I arrived here, I had already spoke with an employee on discord and was told someone would be willing to help me learn to play Yugioh after being out of the game for almost 20 years. I showed up for the 6pm Saturday Yugioh night expecting to learn but to take my lumps from a bunch of experienced players. The owner actually set me up with a Yugioh veteran who sat with me for several hours and thought me how to play. We went over what I knew, basic strategies and then played a demo game where he showed me how everything in the game worked. I could tell he was letting me win to give me turn experience and gave me a chance to set up my board. After the game, we went over deck options and how to keep the game fun but competitive. This is 100% the best way to learn to play. I had a wonderful time and felt very comfortable the entire time. 1st Captial went above and beyond to make sure my experience was unforgettable. If you have any desire to learn how to play any trading card game, this is the...
Read moreMy son was in town for Christmas and this is one of his “things”. I’m glad my wife found 1st Capital Gaming store, south-side of York, PA area. If you’re not familiar, my generation traded/collected sports cards of “real” people that played professional baseball, football, basketball, hockey and each pack came with the white chalky, flat, break into pieces, no flavor gum (for some reason we never throw it away). Fast forward, 1st Capital Gaming store is geared towards, card games, card protectors, books, sleeves, accessories, ask I’m sure they will have an answer. Several titles are; Lorcana, Flesh and Blood, Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Collection: One Piece. BUT this is also a place individuals can meet and greet, engage in card gaming events, share and trade cards. Very friendly owners, shoppers and environment that they can get together. 1st Capital Gaming store hosts card game events. Recommend for anything trading...
