Me and my boyfriend have been trying to find a dog for some time now, we went to the Stillwater Welfare to meet Sugarplum (Zoe) which we ended up adopting because she was a sweetheart who had âslightâ confidence issues and needed âlaid backâ parents. Once we brought her home it was to our surprise that she did not only have âslightâ confidence issues but extreme trauma that we were not informed about. For four days we tried everything to make it work for her and our other animal Jambo. After everything we realized that this puppy was not just the normal hard puppy who isnât potty trained and has spurts of playtime but is a dog who has clearly been through some extreme trauma, she would stop in her tracks if she even heard a peep. There was more but thats not the point here, sadly we werenât able to accommodate this since we are just college students who donât have the training that she needs! So we brought her back, we were trying so hard to keep her but the days of us both crying and having anxiety was too much. We reluctantly brought her inside and the lady who âhelpedâ us with her completely talked down to us. Saying that we should have thought about these things before getting a dog and that it was in her contract that she needed extra care. The contract in which me and my boyfriend read front to back that did not state this and the person who gave us the dog did not say anything either. She talked down to us and quickly took the dog without letting us say goodbye. Please do not get a dog from here and do not bring dogs here. If I would have known I would have brought her back to a...
Read moreIf you want good, knowledgeable people, go anywhere but here. I am a certified dog trainer through Animal Behavior College (one of the top dog obedience schools) and adopted a dog from OKC animal welfare who turned out to be a bit more than I could handle in my current situation. The longer I had him, the worse he got in my one bedroom apartment. Loved him so much. I tried to take him here for convenience sake cause I had work that same day. The staff proceeded to talk to me like I didn't know my dog or what I was talking about, saying that he'd act better if they temperament tested after I was gone (that's not how that works. When a dog is left in a strange place by someone they're attached to, the stress can cause them to act out) they talked down to me like I was less than and didn't just spend two years in school for animal behavior. Needless to say, I took him back to OKC where they understood my position, apologized that it didn't pan out, and I gave them as much info about him as I could to hopefully find him a good home. For the safety of the animals in this facility's care, more training and education on how a dog changes for the worse in a shelter environment is needed along with lessons in compassion and how to handle owners who are trying their best to do right...
Read moreJust as a forewarning to people wanting to adopt any animals from here. They do not have kennel cough under control here. It was to my understanding a common rule you weren't allowed to adopt an animal out till they are fully cleared health wise. But I adopted a dog from here and she developed symptoms of kennel cough pretty fast. Now the other 2 dogs I had before I got her, one elderly and one other puppy, have kennel cough. They are not willing to help you out and they blame the new owner for not taking the dog to the vet right after adoption. They should have made sure all the dogs were clear before adopting her out. If you adopt a dog from here make sure to quarantine them for at least a week before letting them in with your other dogs. Dont make my mistake and struggle with vet Bill's for...
