Not a normal card shop experience and not in a good way. I went in there asking for a binder to look through because I’m the type of person that just likes the browse and if I see something I like I buy it. The guy behind the counter says “we don’t have those thank God we got rid of them, but you can use this kiosk over there” and points to a computer. I went there with a group of friends mind you too. I was having trouble finding foils on there so I walked up to the guy and asked him for some particular foil cards and why they weren’t showing up. He then proceeded to tell me that “oh yeah, sometimes the system has been giving us trouble with that lately when it comes to foils”. I asked him if he had these particular foil cards then. After a few moments he pulls out a stack of foil cards that I wanted and I said “well can I see them I want to expect them for condition” now mind you this guy told me that they mark everything LP condition even if it could be NM which in my opinion is ridiculous and the condition rating exist for a reason, but anyway. He then replied “ well I can’t let you touch the cards”. At this point I was getting pretty frustrated. I asked him to come closer so I can look at them then and while he held each one he had to turn them physically so I couldn’t see them which was so ridiculous. I decided that I wanted all but one of them and had to walk back to the computer to log all of them submit them and then walk back to the counter so he can cash me out. Nothing like shopping at your local game store through a computer screen I tell you. Can’t touch the cards, can’t interact with the guy behind the counter ( feel like he was more of a robot then a person), can’t pull out a binder and just look because they don’t have any anymore and to top it off I wanted this One card worth $320 that they were selling for $400. The guy behind the counter said he can ask management and the worst they could say is no as he suggested, I agreed. Management got back and declined my offer which was irritating. Now mind you I have no clue what he paid for it so maybe he has to sell higher to make money but I doubt it. Not how I would run a card shop at all what a...
Read moreThis is by far the most personable game store in Rochester. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and the patrons are kind. The atmosphere makes you want to come back, and I feel like the people deserve great reviews, so I'm rating it based on that. But I recently did some comparisons and have come away very disappointed in this store.
There is one serious problem: the prices. A brutal example: an Ixalan booster box here costs $130 pre-tax. It's a good thing I looked around, because there is no other game store in Rochester that sells them for a price nearly that high. I purchased one at another small local store for $102.53 AFTER tax. Had I made the purchase here, I would have gotten absolutely gouged. The store credit is great if not unique and allowed me to purchase an Ixalan bundle at the same per-pack price as a booster box, but I am too afraid to see what other stores are selling bundles for. Probably $10 less at the very least. I'm lucky that I decided to do research, because it feels terribly unfair to be charging such exorbitant prices for products that other small stores can sell for so much less.
I still came back for singles, because even though you'll also pay a few bucks more per card than most anywhere else, I know it's hard for smaller stores to keep up with the market.
The genuineness of the people here keeps dragging me back, but I come in knowing I'm ripping myself off a little bit just to support an LGS, and my options are limited since I refuse to pay $30 more for the exact same (already expensive) product. If there could be an effort to lower the prices even just closer to the competition, I would feel a lot less bad draining my wallet at my otherwise...
Read moreThis store is almost like no other. The owners try to get to know you and help get you more excited for the things you love to do. The staff is so friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. They have games out for you to test and play and the staff will help you learn it too. They have so many games...from classic family games to really complex co-op games. They also have SO MANY store events, everything from open board game nights, to Friday Night Magic, to Star Wars Armada nights. The store recently (2019) moved to a new location and this place is so comfortable! It warm and inviting and there are ample tables in the back for all sorts of games and couches in the front. Right now, they're doing Christmas events like a secret santa (think like the Reddit secret Santa), a Christmas tree lighting and a day where if you bring a stocking, you get double point on their store rewards system for everything you can fit in the stocking. They even have a kiosk for picking out Magic cards on a tablet so you don't have to go through boxes of cards. You just pick out what you want on the tablet and they pull it for you. The register is right next to the tablet so it's really easy. They even have some locally handmade dice bags. I really, truly hope this store stays a staple in Penfield for a...
