Almost 20 years ago, I chose Cornell’s to help me find the perfect engagement ring. Their staff was insightful, patient and an overall pleasure to work with. I chose a timeless princess cut diamond to sit atop an equally stunning JFA design.
From time to time as the years have gone by, we’ve stopped in at Cornell’s to make sure the diamond was tight in the prongs and to have it cleaned and polished. With each visit we have been met with smiles and great service.
As they say, life happened, and we wound up moving to Michigan. Going against our better judgement, we decided to visit a local jeweler to have the ring cleaned and the prongs tightened. The jeweler we later found out, new nothing of JFA designs and took it upon themselves to completely change the design of my wife’s ring. We have been back and forth all summer trying to undo their mistakes and they decided they were no longer going to try to correct their wrong.
I contacted Michael Cornell at Cornell’s and explained what had happened and asked for his help in working with JFA to restore my wife’s ring, as JFA only deals with jewelers and not the general public. He was very attentive and empathetic for the unpleasant experience we had been through. I sent him some photos and additional information that he was able to compare with his records. He quickly got back to me and let me know he would be happy to help any way he could.
My wife and I decided to pack up the family, drive over to Rochester and make a weekend out of the trip to deliver the ring to Cornell’s. I met with Michael on Saturday and had a pleasant conversation with him about many things including our unfortunate experience with the jeweler in Michigan. He took very detailed notes about what we were looking for in restoring the ring and we reviewed them multiple times for clarity. I left Cornell’s knowing my wife’s ring was going to be good as new.
After a week or two, Michael called me up to let me know the ring was back from JFA and it was ready. He explained that he and his two master jewelers had reviewed it against what we were looking to correct and they knew we would be happy with the work. He was right. The ring is as good as new! My wife and I are immensely thankful to Michael and Cornell’s for all their help. Cornell’s could have easily turned us away knowing they were not responsible to fix another jeweler’s mistake, but they didn’t. For us, the 5th C of diamond and jewelry quality is Cornell’s.

Read moreI'd give Cornell's 0 stars if I could but I'm forced to leave them at least 1. I arrived at the store with about 1/2 hour until closing time to look at a specific engagement ring/wedding band I had in mind. This did not leave much time, but I expected to have a brief viewing and conversation and could return another day if I liked it and wanted to proceed. I was 1 of 3 customers there, and there were 2 sales associates already working with the other 2 customers. Neither of them so much as glanced in my direction during my 3 laps around the store to get someone's attention. They did not even say "thanks for waiting, someone will be right with you". I assumed the woman who buzzes people in the front door would make someone aware that a customer came in, but I went back to her, confirmed that I didn't need an appointment to be there, and waited another several minutes for an available associate named Rosemary who was clearly just snacking. Rosemary seemed annoyed with my last minute presence (at this point I had waited 10+ minutes for a greeting), took me upstairs to look at the ring I wanted to see and some similar to it, all the while being apathetic and very rude. She knew she wasn't making a sale that day so she didn't care to deal with me. She answered my questions as though I was an imbecile and I felt as though I was being judged since I didn't roll up with my doctor/lawyer almost-fiance and a briefcase full of cash. She was extremely condescending the whole time. My boyfriend and I could have each individually afforded what I wanted with cash immediately, but she didn't know that and assumed otherwise. No sale for Rosemary that day! No sale for Rosemary ever. Never going there again. The jewelry is beautiful but the humans who work there are not good people. I expected some snobbery and poshness as it is high end, but I did not expect the rudeness, nor did I deserve it. There are much finer establishments to visit in the Rochester area who don't treat you like dirt and actually care about all customers. After reading some of the other poor reviews on here, I'm not surprised I had this kind of experience. Use this place as a last resort, you'll have a much better...
Read moreMy experience with Cornell’s was admittedly very poor. I am writing this review a year later, after I have collected some actual experience on the subject of watch buying and trading. When I went there I had a very common and easy to acquire Hamilton reference number in mind. I knew I could have had it shipped to my door directly from the Hamilton website, but as someone who was new to the hobby, I wanted the experience of buying from a brick and mortar dealer. I did a 50% down payment and ended up waiting a total of approximately 5 months for a simple Khaki Field. I am aware that sometimes that’s the game you have to play, but not for something like the watch I wanted. I didn’t know any better at the time, but in retrospect there was complete disregard for my money and the product, probably because I wasn’t spending $5000 plus on a Rolex. As someone who’s an AD (or boutique) of Hamilton, there was very limited knowledge of the product line or how the supply worked. Every 4 weeks I would check in and I would get the run around about it, just saying negative things about “their guy over at Hamilton” The GM had a typical sales-type attitude and never gave me any real answers and always had an excuse as to why a watch I could get in 5 days online was not available for 20 weeks. I honestly think they kept forgetting about me. The worst part is when I asked them why I can’t cancel my order and simply buy the watch online, one of the sales women (in complete confidence) texted me that Hamilton does not sell watches online and I should be aware of scams. The GM gave me a very hard time about getting my downpayment back and I almost had to go through my credit card company to reverse the charge. For anyone that doesn’t know, Hamilton has an official website that shipped it to my door in 5 days. I’m aware that there’s some special products out there where you have to be on a waitlist etc but this watch was not anything of that nature. The hassle simply isn’t worth it, and Cornell’s enjoyed a 5 month interest free...
