My husband went in yesterday and knew exactly what he was looking for. He was not aware that the store closed at 6 PM, and the staff was quite rude to him about there being 4 minutes left for him to shop.
I understand wanting to go home. I understand that customers can be EXCEPTIONALLY rude and entitled. But that’s not him. He was in and out in less than 4 minutes, and he did not make them stay late. If your store is open until 6 PM, people should be able to shop and buy something until 6 PM without anyone getting snarky.
We’ve also noticed an element of snobbery towards him on other occasions that we’ve popped in. The staff is more than happy to wait on me, but when they see him - a big man with tattoos who isn’t dressed in posh fashions - they look right down their nose. I stopped shopping at the Rhinebeck store for that reason; if my husband isn’t good enough for your store, I’m not either.
I wish he hadn’t purchased the book from here to be honest, but he wanted it then. We’ll stick with the staff at the Oblong in Millerton; they’re much more professional, welcoming and don’t treat him like he’s not good enough to be...
Read moreI love Oblong books! I think I've bought ten books from them this year, which is impressive since I live in Texas and have only been in twice. Not only do they have a huge selection and a lovely, spacious store, the employees are total sweethearts who chat easily with you and go above and beyond (two of them helped me fix my shoe last week by giving me some packing tape). I like that they have a lot of signed copies of books, as well as post cards, tarot cards, stickers, socks, toys, and bookmarks. I really like coming in but I spend way too much money here because everything is calling my name.
Coming from Texas, too, it's a great feeling to walk in and feel so immediately at ease as a member of the LGBT community. I have a bunch of their stickers, a few of which reference drag queens and protecting trans people. I'm really glad for a...
Read moreWent there this morning with my family on vacation. We had been last year as well. We were one of two families with little kids in the store. We heard two employees complaining about having children in the store. Additionally they were complaining about folks from NYC coming to the area on vacation. We will send an email to the store as well but I would not recommend going here if you have children or if you are on vacation. We checked out because I didn't want to make a scene in front of the kids. Not sure if it matters but we will definitely not...
