I recently visited Union Sports Arena to explore it as a potential venue for a private event and had the pleasure of chatting with Ken. To my surprise, the facility is more expansive than it appears from the outside. Ken graciously gave me a tour, showcasing the main rink complemented by a smaller practice rink and a snug indoor field area.
The upstairs food shop exuded a welcoming atmosphere, making it seem like a fantastic spot to unwind. Additionally, they offer birthday rental options.
They've been there for over 22 years, yet it's a spot I've driven by countless times without paying notice. Tucked off Route 22 a bit, it doesn't stand out from the highway, but nonetheless, it left a lasting impression on me with the story of why they started and the very family-oriented goals they practice.
As I consider Union Sports Arena for my private event, I can't help but recommend it, especially for those venturing into hockey at various training levels. The facility seems to boast a great coaching team, promising a nurturing environment for learning and...
Read moreHave been using this rink since its inception, it's come a long way. It fulfills its basic functions; Decent Ice (they could let it dry longer before allowing skaters on and minimal large chips and cracks in the surface), full-team sized locker rooms with shower faculties (would chop my foot off before walking in barefoot). Equipped with a private-run pro shop; not a huge selection or variety and no bargain shopping. If you are looking for a good skate sharpening, go someplace else!! unless it is an absolute necessity. Staff and ownership (I personally know) are very accommodating. Pricing is fair for open skate. Open hockey is $15 for 90 minutes (most other rinks in the area are $10 for 120min) there are a few sessions per week, not the most convenient times, but if you love hockey who cares?, usually a good turn out with minimal benders, almost always 2+ goalies. Men's Leagues are a great feature of the rink. Also features indoor soccer, small arcade, small café and vending, large waiting room to beat the cold, and an oversized...
Read moreRink is pretty nice but it gets VERY chaotic during open skate. I was here with my family on 3/19 during open skate and there were about five 6-7 year old kids, clearly hockey players, who were great skaters but no regard for others. They almost took me out a few times.
They were scraping up ice with their skates and then chasing each other with the ice balls they made from the shavings. They were zig-zagging, cutting everyone off, skating opposite direction, and diving at each other. This is apparently ok because nobody stopped them. My group of six ended our skating session early because it was just too dangerous to try to skate around them. The kids were fantastic skaters but were a danger to others. Too bad the rink doesn’t...
