Starting dance at the age of 50 was one of the most intimidating things I’ve ever done. I had never taken a class before, and walking into a ballet studio for the first time was honestly nerve-wracking. From the very beginning, though, the teachers at Dance Theatre Northwest made me feel cared for, supported, and encouraged in every way. They are not only incredibly skilled instructors, but also truly loving people who invest in every student’s journey.
What surprised me most was how quickly I felt at home here. The entire studio family welcomed me with open arms, and over time, it has become so much more than a place where I take class—it has become a second family. The encouragement, camaraderie, and joy I’ve experienced at DTNW are unlike anything else.
Now, three years later, I look back in awe at how far I’ve come. I started in the Absolute Beginner Ballet class, and today I’m dancing in the Intermediate Pointe classes—something I never would have imagined possible when I first began. That kind of progress only happens because of the thoughtful programming, excellent instruction, and caring environment that Dance Theatre Northwest provides.
I can’t say enough about this studio. I love the classes, I love the teachers, I love the beautiful facilities, and most of all, I love how every dancer—whether young or old, new or experienced—is valued and supported. Coming to class is truly the highlight of my week, and I am so grateful to have found DTNW. Joining this community has been life-changing, and I couldn’t be happier to...
Read moreIt gives me great pleasure to offer my testimonial to the wonderfulness of Dance Theatre Northwest and artistic director Melanie Kirk-Stauffer. When I moved to Washington 3 years ago a dear friend of mine who is both a student as well as a teacher at Dance Theatre Northwest knew of my love of photography and introduced me to Melanie thinking that maybe I could do some photography work for the performances. Melanie welcomed me and has worked with me to help me grow in the knowledge of taking photos of dancers. As a result I have spent many hours at the studio witnessing Melanie moving from class to class during long days with seemingly nonstop energy. While offering whole class instruction she will move from dancer to dancer and offer tips for improvement and she does it all with grace and is very complimentary to each of the students. The students are devoted to learning and it has been amazing to watch the growth of individual dancers over the past 3 years. My involvement at Dance Theatre Northwest has been one most enjoyable and ongoing experiences of having moved...
Read moreI started dancing at Dance Theatre Northwest before COVID, and I couldn't wait to return once everything opened up again. I have learned so much! I loved DTNW and all the people I met while dancing there. I have gained new skills such as dancing en pointe and progressed as a dancer getting encouragement from the amasing instructors and being inspired by some advanced adult and young dancers. I enjoyed performing for the community at seasonal showcases and at recitals. I have made a lot of new friends at DTNW. Several months ago I moved across the country, but not a day goes by that I don't miss my time...
