Can't believe Upper Arlington tolerates this unscrupulous business in their community. The puppy I bought here has pneumonia (diagnosed by third party X-ray).
SUMMARY: -The puppy was on medication and diagnosed with kennel cough, yet still offered for sale and not isolated from other animals. -Sales staff appear friendly, but withheld important health information -Beautiful, clean storefront, but looks are deceiving -Petland Kingsdale requires a purchase contract and acknowledgment of a Limited Puppy Warranty that is valid only if you use their veterinarians (conflict of interest) and buy their food/products.
MY STORY After months of searching for a specific breed through adoption and exhausting local options, I reluctantly considered Petland Kingsdale. Impressed by the cleanliness of the store, the staff seemed knowledgeable and compassionate.
I'll admit - I was fooled.
Despite its upscale location and pleasant staff, my experience confirmed Petland's troubling reputation.
While playing with the puppy, I noticed a coughâand I asked the clerk whether it was a cough or excitement - and the clerk said it was due to excitement. This was not true.
Moments later, I witnessed an employee behind the glass administer pink liquid (oral syringe) to my puppy. I asked the same sales clerk who was assisting me about this. She nonchalantly said it was for a cold, common in their âdoggy daycareâ environment, where dogs pass "colds" to one another continuously. I assumed this was minor since the puppy was on display and housed with another dog. Later I would learn this "cold" is highly contagious "Kennel Cough."
I was reassured that the breeder wasnât a puppy mill. I took some time and did my research. I learned that the breeder was a small operation and not from Missouri, Indiana, or Ohioâstates known for puppy mills and lax animal welfare laws. The breeder had no violations or consumer complaints. That gave me enough confidence to proceed.
So, I signed the âPetland Kingsdale Puppy Purchase Contractâ and received vaccination records.
Only after paying- and signing this contract -was I given a medication list, intake report, and asked to sign a medical disclosure. Thatâs when I learned the puppy had been on antibiotics for over a month and had been diagnosed with HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS "Kennel Cough" by Healthy Pets of Wedgewoodâthe vet practice Petland Kingsdale uses to visit its puppies weekly (as stated by their salespeople).
I was concerned, but trusted the care plan. I continued treatment at home.
Two days later, the cough persisted. I consulted my own vet, who examined the puppy and ordered x-rays. He diagnosed my puppy with PNEUMONIA. Iâve spent around $600 in unreimbursed vet bills, and while my puppy is still recovering, I remain hopeful.
My vet also reviewed the puppy's vaccination form and noted the puppy had undergone aggressive treatment for worms and parasites, though the stool sample was clear - thankfully.
I wanted to report the pneumonia diagnosis to Healthy Pets, but instead of reaching out to the practice that saw my puppy, I contacted a different branch. Over the phone, a vet tech from the other office confirmed they routinely see Petland puppies with respiratory infections and parasites.
After this, I vowed never to use Petlandâs recommended vetâdespite glowing praise from staff.

Read moreThey sold us a sick puppy. Iâve purchased a puppy from here a few years ago and all was well. Fast forward to this past Monday, my mother and her boyfriend drove all the way from Toledo to get this new baby (Below is Phoebe). The second she got there, they âthoughtâ they handed her the puppy they told her about as they communicated prior to the pickup. My mom got sick so her and her boyfriend went to eat next door. The second they walk in from eating dinner, they inform my mom that they handed her the âwrongâ puppy. They gave her the âcorrectâ puppy and sent the baby home with an âantibioticâ. Fast forward to the next few days, my mom calls me worried because her new puppy has not eaten. I told her itâs normal and thatâs what happened with my dog and itâs due to stress because of their new environment (which youâd think the employees know since they work with puppies all day.). I told her to try and make her and and if she still doesnât eat, take her to the vet. Mind you, they have a 14 day policy which was said on behalf of the employee, that if the puppy were to visit their vets listed in paperwork, theyâd be financially responsible for the vet visits within 14 days. My mom has work and I live in Arizona so Iâm not able to drive all the way to Columbus. The next day my mom calls me even more upset and worried because Phoebe is now aspirating, throwing up, still not eating and has diarrhea. The soonest my mom can get her into the vet was 5:30pm today at her local vet. The doctor ran blood tests and while she is up to date and negative of parvo, her liver results are through the roof and the vet advised a $2k overnight stay to stabilize her. The vet also mentioned that the âantibioticâ that they sent her home with was actually a parasitic. Once my mom left the vet before she had to call off work, the vets Petland refers us to is NOT 24 hours which is was medically necessary of overnight care. I immediately call the store and was given a number to their corporate office. Weâre all on a 3way call and I have to go as Iâm heading into work. After I hang up the phone, the manager from corporate tries to flip it on my mom and said she was weird for waiting 3 days and tried to make it seem like she was negligent of Phoebe. A) My mother is devastated and heartbroken as this was extremely unexpected. B) Way to make her feel worse by accusing her of neglect. The second my mom tells me about the phone call, Iâm fuming. I immediately call the store and demand they reimburse us regardless of whatever vet we visit. I told them about my momâs experience with corporate and the employee agreed with the manager from corporate. She cut me off and denied that the medication was a parasitic and insisted it was an antibiotic. She does not know what sheâs talking about because she didnât know that puppies donât eat due to stress and Iâm sure she doesnât even know the name of the medication that they sent my mother home with. I told her something needs to be figured out immediately or I will get in contact with a lawyer and file a lawsuit and she told me in exact words âGo ahead and do that. Let me know how that works outâ and hangs up on me. My momâs boyfriend calls and they hang up on him too. Since they feel comfortable accusing my poor, frantic mother of neglect now I feel comfortable accusing these girls of giving my mom a sick puppy on purpose due to the first hand mixup. The professionalism is a joke here. They have absolutely 0 business working with animals! I will fight for little Phoebe and all of those puppies they neglect of their health and I will fight for my mom too because she did not deserve such a traumatic experience. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure these puppies are in exceptional health before you send them home to a family. Update: Unfortunately, Phoebe has passed away but without Bethâs help, we wouldnât have the privilege to utilize every single option possible to save Phoebeâs life. Thank you Beth. Thank you for fighting for Phoebe and my mom. In 3 short days, she made quite the impact...
Read moreI have bought a puppy from this petland recently.
I will admit the obvious that I well overpayed. But to be honest she was worth it to me. I know many say don't shop adopt. But I believe all animals regardless of where they come from deserve a home.
But the pros and cons of our experience of buying our little girl.
Pros: 1.) She came with lots if items such as vitamins, food, potty bells, heartbeat pillow, blanket, stick treat, free vet exam and stool parasite test, free obedience class, coupon for $25 off of spay, dog food container, supplements, breeder and kennel information she came from, previous vet papers and vaccination record, the "free puppy for life program". 2.) Holly worked with us on price. I do not believe in financing an animal. You can either afford it or you can't in my oppinion. I was firm on the amount I was willing to pay even though I still over payed. Holly did great with keeping my number and texting further. she did amazing with answering all of our questions too. 3.) My puppy received a clean bill of health from our vet and the vet exam petland payed for. 4.) My puppy was completely crate trained when we brought her home (10 weeks old at time of purchase). 5.) My puppy is very intelligent. Had her 6 days and already knows her name, fetch, and sit. And doing well with potty training. 6.) Amazing with my 2 small children 4 and 1. 7.) Puppy was bathed and had a free bandana on at time of purchase. 8.) Hard working staff that WORKED IN THE KENNEL.
Cons: 1.) At time of purchase all paperwork was gone over... or so I thought. When I got home I realized there was a vet paper I was NOT shown at time of purchase that said my puppy had kennel cough. I was given antibiotics at purchase due to her having "slight nose discharge" when they first got her. And told that it was just recommended for her. Issue here is I WAS NOT told anything about kennel cough or shown that paper. But I will say on the contrary the antibiotics must have been given while petland had her and she did get get a clean bill of health from 2 different vet's. So im not too upset over this but nonetheless it's still pretty bad. 2.) Yes puppy came with all kinds of thing's... but none that were very useful to me personally. The dog food was not recommended by OUR vet. I was told to use something name brand such as purina. And was told the vitamins we had are unnecessary for puppy as long as she had a good source of vitamins from a good quality dog food. 3.) "Puppy for Life program"... its a scam (I knew this before purchase though) in order to keep it "active" you must purchase dog food (doesn't sell my preferred brand), vitamins, and supplements from them 4 times a year. So that's about a $65 per purchase. X4 and that's 260 a year. Hypothetically puppy lives her expected life life expectancy of 14 years. 260 X 14 = 3,640. So therfore with how much money I would give Petland through the years would already equal up to another puppy. So is it a free puppy? No lol. But some may think this program is worth it. I do not. 4.) HORRIBLE STAFF (excluding kennel workers and Holly). Alot of these reviews about the staff is pretty spot on. They are rude, they stand and gossip, they do not seem friendly, it just looks like social hour at the desk... this almost turned me away completely. But not my puppys fault. 5.) Simple one here I OVER PAYED. Lol but I knew this and that was my fault. But I do think puppys should be a bit more affordable.
TIPS: 1.) ASK QUESTIONS. No question is a dumb question. 2.) They are more willing to negotiate price on Sundays since they get new puppy's in on Mondays. 3.) Go over each paper thoroughly before paying. 4.) Ask for Holly when you have serious inquiries. Other staff seems pretty incompetent. 5.) If you can find a breeder or can adopt do it... alot more affordable.
Would I recommend? Yes and no due to my mixed feelings above. So make your own choices regardless of any reviews.
That is all. If this was helpful then đđ». This took a while...
