Read moreMy husband loves Magic and my daughter loves Pokémon. My knowledge of Pokémon doesn't go beyond the 1995 show (which I loved as a kid). My kid is 8 and she loves Pokémon, she can hold a conversation about the cards, Pokémon types, history of and just fun facts about Pokémon. When she is interested in something she immerses herself in it. I saw this place and was excited because they sell single cards and my daughter has a large collection so I knew they may have something she wanted but has not gotten in a booster pack. I took her and she was so excited. The store is pretty cool, very different from the corporate places I've been in. The staff is super nice but our interaction with one is the reason why this is a 4 star review. I felt that the person that helped us was impatient with my daughter. She takes her time when looking at everything. She's very methodical. I didn't ask for help by the way, he just was waiting on us. My daughter was taking her time looking and he suggested maybe getting a booster pack instead. Then I guess saw someone he knew and proceeded to take multiple cards, that my daughter was looking at, to show this person that just walked in. Like I'd understand if the guy was there looking as well but my daughter seemed to be brushed off as just a kid looking for cool cards. This is a missed opportunity. She is the next generation and a girl in a male dominated world of gaming. She is often discouraged by the marketing that seems to leave her out. He didn't have to hold a conversation or anything with her but simple words go a long way. The guy at checkout just told her the cards were cool choices and it made her happy. Super simple words but they mattered to her. My daughter wants to go back because it definitely didn't discourage her but I just wanted to bring this to their attention for future interactions...
Read moreIt feels like they are only in business because they are the only store in Visalia.
I've been to a lot of game stores, but here they don't really put the 'Friendly' into Friendly Local Game Store. Every time we are in there, unless directly helping a customer, it always seems like all of the employees are just hanging out. Which is weird because they literally have boxes of miniatures sitting on the floor.
Their community also seems not that great. Have been told by multiple employees they have a great D&D game that anyone can join, but every time I've gone in the group has started 15 minutes before the time they say, ignored everyone who wasn't already in their group and doesn't feel like a game people can actually go in and join.
My girlfriend also has had the employees stare at her and watch her around the store and they make her uncomfortable. There have been time I have attended an event and she was in the front of the store and they have come up to her asking "do you know what system that is for" despite us having been in multiple times and having talked to them about the systems. Really just fitting the stereotype of gatekeeping and acting like women don't know about games.
In a vacuum, having a game store is better than not having a game store in town. But I'm much more likely to drive 30-45 minutes to Hanford or Fresno for a game store where I actually feel welcomed and a part of...
