I took my engagement ring here to be resized and soldered to another band. The owner was a bit condescending during our discussion. He told me it would be ten days until the ring would be ready. On the scheduled pick up date, he called me ten minutes prior to the scheduled pick up time to tell me that he just realized that all of the brackets and tips were “loose” and needed repair, and that he would require an additional ten days and $170 more than the original quote. He clearly hadn’t even looked at the ring. Against my gut feeling, I allowed him to complete the work that he said was needed. After this additional service was completed, I received my “repaired” ring. The solder was crooked and rough. Less than a week later, a diamond fell out of my ring. I took it to another jeweler, who informed me that the brackets and tips had been seriously damaged by whoever had worked on it previously (Michael’s), which had caused the diamond to fall out. He also measured the ring, and it hadn’t even been sized to the correct size that I requested. I had to pay the new, much more professional jeweler to repair, solder, and resize my ring again. First, the shop smelled like stale cigarette or cigar smoke. We were selling a 1oz gold coin and this shop was listed on an official website for paying spot (like most other reputable places do) but... without any real chat he took the coin to the computer, looked up spot price, tip-tapped at the calculator, went to a few retail websites then came back with a price close to 20% under spot. When I asked why he gruffly said "I've gotta make my money" We drove less than a mile down the road to Centerville Coin, also listed on the same website of local dealers, and got full spot price along with some knowledgeable conversation.
