A thought that frequently occurs to me: the amount of gratitude I have for Dr. Jon Kula is something I will never be able to explain to him. Chronic pain is an awful thing. It is terrible; it affects parts of your life you wouldn't consider unless you've experienced it (and no one should). In my (longer than ever imagined) quest to FIX IT, I have seen an absurd number and variety of medical professionals in the area, and had felt at certain points either that it was, out of sheer frustration and anger, time to give up looking or to "make peace" with it (whichever is the way to frame it). I still can't believe after all that time and all those people that I found Jon Kula--I almost can't believe there is a Jon Kula, really. I have never, in all those people, seen someone with his unbelievable depth of understanding of exactly what is going on, exactly what I'm talking about, to say nothing of the profoundly intelligent, knowing way in which he will communicate that understanding. He is both deeply compassionate and refreshingly honest. He will not give you false hope. He will give you his whole effort. He understands What. He. Is doing. To a degree I've not ever seen (with the exception of the extraordinary doctors at Regenerative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine). And he will take the time to explain it to you. He (unlike some doctors/PTs) does not look at patients as wins he can take credit for if he heals them; therefore he is not frustrated with patients when things are hard. He is right there with you, whatever that means in the moment, to treat your issue with incredible competence in any given circumstance.
Beyond what he has done for my physical improvement (which I hope will continue and continue), what feels truly amazing to me is knowing there is an office I can go to every week where someone knows exactly what is going on. I can't explain the gratification or reassurance, the relief, of this. I don't quite have the words for what the experience has meant to me. I know what it feels like to hope and be very scared and to worry and to have something overpromised to you, and I would never want to do that. I can't tell you he will fix you, and he would never tell you that either without much, much more data. All I can tell you is GO TO JON KULA. But do not take my spots :)
And do not forget that you are your own very best advocate, fighter,...
Read moreI have EDS and POTS, walk with lofstrands, and have been seeing Jon Kula since 2013. Of all the medical professionals I've seen over the years (this includes my doctors and specialists), I can credit Jon with keeping me walking as my body deteriorates. He asks all the right questions to be able to sort out where my body has failed and what exercises and movements I can learn to do under his guidance to shore up the available parts of my body that are still working as well as try to plateau the parts that are in freefall. Jon is smart, thoughtful, curious, funny, and above all professional in manner and incredibly well read. Between appointments, when I come in with something that has gone terribly cattywampus, he will research new papers put out by EDS specialists to better understand why things are happening and how we can stabilize the decline. He is constantly learning, adapting, and responding to the changes that are happening to my muscles and joints. Due to the years of care, dedication, and education Jon has given to me week after week, I feel strong with a better understanding of how far I can push myself and how to feel my limitations in a body that gets junky without much warning. Hiking, skiing, camping, etc, yup... all on lofstrands or adaptive poles, and I credit Jon 100% for keeping my dreams alive. I can't count the number of times I've brought my busted self back in to Jon when I overdo it (like falling out of a canoe). He evaluates the damage, asks a ton of questions of what went well and what didn't and how each of those the actions occurred and where my body failed, and starts rebuilding my progress, all with the genuine mirth of having his client succeed in living well, and with his quick banter that makes sessions with him so enjoyable. It is a relief and a gift to be under such thoughtful, deliberate care. I am grateful for finding CNMR and highly recommend going there, as I do when anyone says they need PT. Thank you, thank you Jon...
Read moreI have had severe pain in my lower back and knees having sustained serious falls. As a result, I have been referred to numerous physical therapy concerns in the DMV that were ok but I always felt something lacking and only noticed minimal improvement.
When you're not a fan of exercise and inspire of your pain/physical condition, I have it important to be associated with a physical therapist who motivates me .
After over 30+ years of intermittent PT, I have found what I consider to be the "creme de la creme " of physical therapists: Dr. Jonathan Kula, Director, Center for Neuromuscular Rehabilitation and Massage. While the office is small, it is very clean (and I am a germaphobe) and has all the equipment you need.
I have been a client for almost a year and I must say for a "lazy person" as it pertains to exercise, I have witnessed a monumental change in my approach to the therapeutic exercise of Dr. John's regiment.
For me, I have to credit Dr. John because of his imparting knowledge and easy approach that educates me about my physical issues and how the various modalities will assist in improving my condition. I have previously been referred to what's considered the best PT offices and this is the first time I that I have had the therapist truly "educate me" opposed to "just treating me."
While my injuries will never disappear, thanks to Dr. Kula and the Center for Neuromuscular Rehabilitation and Massage for working with me as a team to improve my physical ailments.
Might I also add, that Dr. John has the most awesome personality that is a great help on a bad day. So in spite of my health issues I am now enjoying more of life and this is of the utmost importance, because life is short!!
Thanks to Dr. John and staff of the Center for Neuromuscular Rehabilitation and Massage who I...
