Cortney is a nice woman and her shop is welcoming and tidy but I cannot in good faith recommend her. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt -- even after she was unresponsive and very very late, but there is no excuse for the way my hair came out. Here is my condensed account.
I went in for a sew in with closure, she braided my hair too tight, especially around the edges. I mentioned this to her and she said it would loosen up. It did eventually, but it took my hair with it! Now I have a bald spot in the exact space I pointed out to her. When she started to install the closure, I told her what kind of look I was going for, she insisted that the only way it could be achieved was by cutting the closure and wearing a bang. I didn't want to do this because as many people know, closures are not cheap and I wanted to use it later. She decided that glue would be my best option. I pushed against it but she said this was the only way things would work. This didn't seem quite right, but I still needed my hair done and had already been there for hours, so I decided to trust the process. Big mistake. When I looked in the mirror, I noticed that something was different but figured I just needed to get used to the look. Wrong again.
It wasn't until I got home and really looked at my hair that I learned Cortney had glued the closure to the MIDDLE of my forehead. So much so, that there was a HUGE gap between the start of my hairline and the start of the closure (see pictures). There was no way I could tuck my hair behind my ears without it being super noticeable and I definitely couldn't pull it up. She did a good job pressing the hair but had put so much oil on it, the hair was flat and had no movement whatsoever. My hair looked so bad that I took it out the same night. And this took forever because there was so much glue.
I started not to say anything about my experience, mostly because I am such a supporter of black businesses, especially those owned by women; and again, Cortney is very kind. But there is no way, she would have walked out the door (or even sent a loved one out) looking the way I did. There is a level of trust that you grant a person when it comes to getting your hair done. I trusted Cortney and was left very disappointed, with nothing but a bald spot and a sad story to show for it. I'd like to think that maybe I caught her on a bad day and your experience will be different. That's just a risk I'm not willing...
